1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 528
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing
1-3 Hafsat Abiola of Nigeria, who is speaking on Nigeria Liberation
1-4 Day on Saturday, April 19, 1997; and
1-5 WHEREAS, This outstanding young woman's appearance is
1-6 sponsored by the Organization of Nigerians in the Americas; and
1-7 WHEREAS, The Organization of Nigerians in the Americas is
1-8 the only prodemocracy movement in the Austin area dedicated to the
1-9 enlightenment of the American community about the state of Nigeria
1-10 and of African political events; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Miss Hafsat Abiola is the daughter of
1-12 Chief M. K. O. Abiola, the winner of the June, 1993, presidential
1-13 election; opposed by the ruling military junta, he has been in
1-14 jail since 1994 for winning the election; and
1-15 WHEREAS, During Hafsat Abiola's appearance, a presentation of
1-16 Certificates of Courage and Leadership will be made to three notable
1-17 Nigerians; they are Chief M. K. O. Abiola, Chief Frank Kokori, and
1-18 Attorney Femi Falana; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to welcome Hafsat Abiola
1-20 to our great state; now, therefore, be it
1-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
1-22 75th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to Hafsat Abiola
1-23 for a most successful and productive visit; and, be it further
2-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-2 her as an expression of the highest regard of the Texas Senate.
