 1-4                                     of

 1-5                        John Christian Mayfield, Jr.

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of Abilene in mourning the loss of John Christian Mayfield, Jr.,

 1-8     who died March 4, 1997, at the age of 82; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born February 10, 1915, in Cameron, Texas,

1-10     John Mayfield graduated from Southwest Texas State University

1-11     in San Marcos in 1936; he married Evelyn King on March 5, 1937,

1-12     and served as a pilot and flight instructor in the United States

1-13     Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1945; and

1-14           WHEREAS, John Mayfield was dedicated to his work as the

1-15     founder and owner of Mayfield Paper Company, which he established

1-16     in 1952 in Abilene after having founded the Mayfield Paper Company

1-17     in San Angelo in 1945; and

1-18           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, Mr. Mayfield

1-19     was respected in the community for his many accomplishments; and

1-20           WHEREAS, A well-known civic leader, he was a past director

1-21     of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, the Abilene United Way, the

1-22     Abilene Symphony Orchestra, and the Abilene National Bank; he was

1-23     a past member of the San Angelo Rotary Club and the Board of

 2-1     Development for Hendrick Medical Center; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he

 2-3     gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth,

 2-4     and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, A devout Christian, John Mayfield was a member of

 2-6     First Baptist Church, where he was active in the Silent Ministry; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, John Mayfield was a devoted husband, father, and

 2-8     grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured

 2-9     forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-11     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-12     bereaved family of John C. Mayfield:  his wife, Evelyn Mayfield;

2-13     his sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Deanna Mayfield, Don

2-14     and Cherie Mayfield, and Bill and Sue Mayfield; his sister,

2-15     Ida Byrd Wood; and his six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren;

2-16     and, be it further

2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-18     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the

2-19     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so

2-20     in memory of John Christian Mayfield, Jr.
