 1-5                               Jack Patterson

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of Waco and the entire State of Texas in mourning the loss of one

 1-8     of the state's greatest coaches, Jack Patterson, former Athletic

 1-9     Director at Baylor University, who died on December 17, 1996, at

1-10     the age of 82; and

1-11           WHEREAS, An excellent athlete, Jack Patterson was a 1939

1-12     graduate of Rice University; he coached the University of Houston

1-13     track team from 1944 to 1956 before he became the track coach at

1-14     Baylor University; and

1-15           WHEREAS, When Coach Patterson first went to Baylor in 1956,

1-16     it had never won a Southwest Conference track championship; there

1-17     was even speculation that Baylor would not remain in the Southwest

1-18     Conference; Coach Patterson proved the rumors wrong; and

1-19           WHEREAS, In 1960, Baylor won the first of three Southwest

1-20     Conference track titles; soon after this feat, he was named

1-21     Southwest Conference Coach of the Year, the first nonfootball

1-22     coach to receive this honor; and

1-23           WHEREAS, In 1963, the coach left Baylor to become track

 2-1     coach for Darrell Royal at The University of Texas at Austin,

 2-2     where he won three more Southwest Conference titles; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Returning to Baylor in 1971, he was Athletic

 2-4     Director for nine years, and he hired Coach Grant Teaff as head

 2-5     football coach after an extensive search; in three years, Baylor

 2-6     won its first Southwest Conference football title in 50 years;

 2-7     and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Jack Patterson had a superlative career as a coach

 2-9     and athletic director, but what the statistics do not reveal is

2-10     that he was a wonderful man; the men who worked for him were full

2-11     of admiration for his human qualities and repeatedly referred to

2-12     him as a kind and thoughtful man; and

2-13           WHEREAS, The legacy that Jack Patterson leaves to

2-14     Baylor University is its inclusion as the first private school in

2-15     the Big 12; Coach Patterson's success as a coach and as an Athletic

2-16     Director helped to assure Baylor's acceptance; now, therefore, be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-18     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members

2-19     of his family:  his wife, Lois Whiteley Patterson; his children,

2-20     Dr. Jack C. Patterson and Mrs. David Sibley; and his six

2-21     grandchildren; and, be it further

2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-23     members of his family as an expression of the deepest sympathy from

2-24     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do

2-25     so in memory of Jack Patterson.
