 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 543

 1-3           WHEREAS, April 21 and 22, 1997, are Wise County Days at

 1-4     the State Capitol, and the Texas Senate is pleased to join with

 1-5     the citizens of Wise County in honoring their important

 1-6     contributions to our state; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Wise County was created in 1856 from Cooke

 1-8     County and was named for United States Senator Henry A. Wise,

 1-9     who was an early settler of the area and favored the annexation

1-10     of Texas; and

1-11           WHEREAS, The land is watered by the Trinity River which

1-12     bisects the county from northwest to southeast, providing water

1-13     for the grasslands, wetlands, and agriculture; the county is a

1-14     leading dairy and cattle region as well as a producer of

1-15     vegetables, cantaloupes, watermelons, pecans, and grains; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Well known for its oil and gas production,

1-17     Wise County is also an important source of clays, stone, sand,

1-18     and gravel; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Decatur was selected as a townsite and county

1-20     seat in 1856 and numerous Wise County settlements became important

1-21     stops for the Butterfield Overland Mail Route in the 1800s; and

1-22           WHEREAS, On October 12, 1996, the citizens of Wise County

1-23     celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Wise County Courthouse,

 2-1     which is built of pink limestone from Burnet and is considered a

 2-2     perfect architectural example of its type and era; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, The Wise County Heritage Museum houses archives

 2-4     and mementoes of its early history, including Indian artifacts,

 2-5     art, and relics; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Proud of its colorful history, residents of the

 2-7     area re-create the bygone days each year as they celebrate Chisolm

 2-8     Trail Days, old settlers reunion, Pioneer Days, Cruising Days, and

 2-9     Butterfield Stage Days; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Noted for its wonderful recreational areas and

2-11     natural beauty, Wise County beckons visitors to Lake Bridgeport

2-12     and Eagle Mountain Lake, which are located in rugged but scenic

2-13     country; and

2-14           WHEREAS, These special days are an appropriate occasion

2-15     for the Texas Senate to recognize the citizens of Wise County

2-16     and to commend them for their notable achievements; now,

2-17     therefore, be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-19     75th Legislature, hereby declare April 21 and 22, 1997, as Wise

2-20     County Days at the State Capitol and join with its residents as

2-21     they celebrate their county's greatness; and, be it further

2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-23     the citizens of Wise County as an expression of the admiration

2-24     and appreciation of the Texas Senate.
