 1-5                              Servando Cardenas

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the

 1-7     citizens of San Diego, Texas, in mourning the loss of noted poet

 1-8     Servando Cardenas, who died March 15, 1997, at the age of 87; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born in Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, in 1910, he

1-10     immigrated to the United States when he was 17; and

1-11           WHEREAS, This outstanding poet published a literary journal,

1-12     Alma Azul, in Mercedes in 1927; in San Diego in 1931, he was

1-13     employed by the Spanish weekly, La Libertad; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A prolific writer of poetry in his youth,

1-15     Mr. Cardenas published a weekly newspaper, Alma, in San Diego in

1-16     1938 through 1941 and a second literary journal, Cumbres, in

1-17     Victoria around the same time period; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Mr. Cardenas published over 300 poems which were

1-19     widely published in the United States, Mexico, and Latin America;

1-20     and

1-21           WHEREAS, Five of Mr. Cardenas' poems were included in the

1-22     1980 book, Chicanos, Antologia historica y literaria, compiled by

1-23     Tino Villanueva; the work is an anthology of Hispanic literary works

 2-1     in the United States; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, For many years, Mr. Cardenas worked with the Freer

 2-3     Enterprise; he also owned and operated the Cardenas Print Shop; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Loyal to his adopted country, he was a member of the

 2-5     United States Army during World War II; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman,

 2-7     Servando Cardenas was a leader in his community and was highly

 2-8     respected; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and

2-10     great-grandfather, Servando Cardenas leaves a legacy of compassion

2-11     and commitment which will be remembered with gratitude by those who

2-12     knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-14     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the loved

2-15     ones of Servando Cardenas:  his wife, Maria Elena Cardenas; his

2-16     sons, Servando Cardenas, Eduardo Cardenas, Manuel Cardenas,

2-17     Luis Cardenas, Alfredo E. Cardenas, and Mario Guillermo Cardenas;

2-18     his daughters, Blanca Aurora Sifuentes, Maria Ortiz,

2-19     Evangelina Chapa, Laurie Ann Garcia, and Gabriela Galvan; his

2-20     sister, Blanca Guzman; and his 37 grandchildren and 23

2-21     great-grandchildren; and, be it further

2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-23     his family as an expression of the deepest sympathy from the

2-24     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do

2-25     so in memory of Servando Cardenas.
