        1-3                                     of

        1-4                                 J. F. Elder

        1-5           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

        1-6     of Cuero in mourning the loss of prominent citizen J. F. Elder,

        1-7     who died on April 4, 1997, at the age of 87; and

        1-8           WHEREAS, Born on June 28, 1909, in Nixon, he was the son of

        1-9     the late Belle Terry Elder and John Fletcher, Sr.; and

       1-10           WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Cuero, Mr. Elder graduated

       1-11     from San Marcos Academy and became a rancher and farmer; and

       1-12           WHEREAS, A founder of the DeWitt County Rural Electrification

       1-13     Administration, he was a member of the board of directors; and

       1-14           WHEREAS, A man who enjoyed giving back to his community,

       1-15     Mr. Elder was a Cheapside School Trustee, on the board of directors

       1-16     of DeWitt County Soil Conservation District, and a member of the

       1-17     Cuero Independent School District Board of Trustees and the

       1-18     Gonzales Production Credit Association; and

       1-19           WHEREAS, One of the organizers of the Cuero Community

       1-20     Hospital and Cuero Pecan House, Mr. Elder was an elder at the

       1-21     First Presbyterian Church in Cuero; and

       1-22           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, Mr. Elder

       1-23     was respected for his many accomplishments; and

        2-1           WHEREAS, Mr. Elder leaves a legacy of compassion and

        2-2     commitment that will be remembered with gratitude by all who knew

        2-3     and loved him; now, therefore, be it

        2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

        2-5     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family

        2-6     of J. F. Elder:  his wife, Annie Lee Brown Elder; his daughter,

        2-7     Peggy Miller; his sons, Fletcher Elder, Donald Elder, and

        2-8     Patrick Elder; and his nine grandchildren and 14

        2-9     great-grandchildren; and, be it further

       2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared

       2-11     for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the

       2-12     Texas Senate, and when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so

       2-13     in memory of J. F. Elder.
