 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 564

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to

 1-4     recognize John E. Matysek, principal of Westlake High School,

 1-5     on his 34 years of outstanding service in the field of education;

 1-6     and

 1-7           WHEREAS, A graduate of Baylor University, John Matysek earned

 1-8     a master's degree in education at Southwest Texas State University;

 1-9     he began his successful career in education as a world history

1-10     teacher and assistant football coach in 1963 with the Yorktown

1-11     Independent School District; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Mr. Matysek joined the Austin Independent School

1-13     District in 1968 and continued to teach world history until 1978

1-14     when he became athletic coordinator, head football coach, and

1-15     dean of boys at Crockett High School; he joined the Eanes

1-16     Independent School District in 1979 as assistant principal of

1-17     Hill Country Middle School; and

1-18           WHEREAS, A talented and hardworking educator, John Matysek

1-19     was named principal of Westlake High School in 1984, where he

1-20     has served with distinction for the last 13 years; and

1-21           WHEREAS, A skilled administrator and an inspirational leader,

1-22     Mr. Matysek has played a major role in making Westlake High School

1-23     the first-rate institution it is today, and he has had a positive

 2-1     influence on the lives of the school's students, staff, and

 2-2     faculty; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, For his exceptional service with the Eanes

 2-4     Independent School District, Mr. Matysek was selected for the

 2-5     Spirit of Education Award by the Eanes Educators Association in

 2-6     1984 and 1990 and was named Administrator of the Year in 1990 by

 2-7     the Texas Association of Journalism Educators; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, John Matysek believes in the traditional approach to

 2-9     education, which includes teaching the basics and teaching students

2-10     to learn self-discipline; he has received recognition for his

2-11     effective implementation of numerous student programs, including

2-12     the Drug Program Student Assistance Model, the Honors Program at

2-13     the 9th-grade and 10th-grade levels, and Project Graduation; and

2-14           WHEREAS, Mr. Matysek has handled the far-reaching

2-15     responsibilities of a principal's position with alacrity and

2-16     dedication, and he is highly respected by fellow educators and

2-17     by the Westlake community for his expertise and his many

2-18     accomplishments; now, therefore, be it

2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-20     75th Legislature, hereby express sincere appreciation to

2-21     John E. Matysek on his notable achievements and his years

2-22     of superior leadership in the field of education and extend

2-23     to him best wishes for the future; and, be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-25     him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
