 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 565

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing the Westlake High School Chaparrals for winning the

 1-5     1996 University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 5A, Division II

 1-6     football championship; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Undefeated after completing their regular season,

 1-8     Westlake began their long journey to the state championship by

 1-9     seizing their first victory over MacArthur High School of San Antonio

1-10     in an action-packed battle, winning by a score of 20 to 10; and

1-11           WHEREAS, The Chaparrals win over MacArthur proved that the

1-12     Westlake Chaparrals, working together as a team, can accomplish

1-13     a highly desired goal; and

1-14           WHEREAS, With indomitable fighting spirit and drive in the

1-15     following game, the Westlake players beat San Antonio Clark High

1-16     School by a score of 33 to 19; and

1-17           WHEREAS, In the regional semifinal game, the Chaparrals opposed

1-18     Victoria High School, beating Victoria's players soundly by a score

1-19     of 41 to 0; the following game was the state quarterfinal, pitting

1-20     the Westlake team against San Antonio Churchill with the Chaparrals

1-21     winning 49 to 23; and

1-22           WHEREAS, The Chaparrals faced Aldine High School next in

1-23     Westlake's quest for the state title; Westlake used its powerhouse

 2-1     offense and soundly defeated Aldine 42 to 21; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Finally Westlake faced Cooper High School of Abilene,

 2-3     and in the second half the Chaparrals pulled ahead attaining a final

 2-4     score of 55 to 15, thereby winning the state title and ending their

 2-5     season undefeated with 16 victories and no losses; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Dedicated to teamwork, the Chaparral players

 2-7     showed indomitable strength in defeating their opponents;

 2-8     the team players are:  Jeremy Amos, Ryan Read, Jonny Rodgers,

 2-9     Nathan Cain, David White, Drew Brees, Jamie Tyler, Tomi Keah,

2-10     Cooper Waddill, Aaron Santiso, Zac Bryant, Bub Downing, Ben DeLeon,

2-11     Jason Piefer, Robert Crawford, Matt Lathrop, Seth McKinney,

2-12     Matt Matza, Scott Killen, Derek Hyzak, Brad Kline, Justin Hartley,

2-13     Mark Fitzgibbons, Justin Binford, Matt Murphy, Hayden Briggle,

2-14     Bradfield Heiser, Spike Sauls, Kurt Thormahlen, Devin Schade,

2-15     Travis Thompson, Jeff White, Jonathan Piefer, John Allen, Ryan Nixon,

2-16     Shane Imbert, Robby Nethercut, Tom Martindale, Sam Thompson,

2-17     Travis Eickenhorst, Brett Buller, Alex Dunlap, Hunter Stewart,

2-18     Dylan Becker, Adam Hall, Brett Robin, Brent Chalmers, Clint Jeane,

2-19     Dan Zoch, Pat Malone; and

2-20           WHEREAS, Head Coach Ron Schroeder and the dedicated and

2-21     talented assistant coaches:  Derek Long, Mark Hurst, Lefty Fisher,

2-22     Jim Darilek, Neal LaHue, David Smart, and Steve Davis deserve

2-23     recognition for the team's efforts and flawless performances;

2-24     athletic director Ebbie Neptune, and trainers Brad Hawkins and

2-25     Vicki Stafko, team doctor Dr. Newt Hasson, and student trainers

 3-1     and managers Christina Baker, Aaron Wilson, Bradley Woolwine,

 3-2     Ryan Nutt, Emily Veneski, and Zach Woosley greatly assisted the

 3-3     efforts of the Westlake squad; and

 3-4           WHEREAS, The Westlake Chaparrals exhibited the highest ideals

 3-5     of American sportsmanship, and the team members have brought honor

 3-6     to their school and their community; and

 3-7           WHEREAS, The Westlake High School Chaparrals proved

 3-8     themselves champions in every sense of the word, and the

 3-9     Texas Senate is proud to honor them; now, therefore, be it

3-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

3-11     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the coach and players

3-12     of the Westlake High School football team for their well-earned

3-13     laurels in winning the 1996 UIL Class 5A, Division II state

3-14     championship; and, be it further

3-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

3-16     this excellent team as a token of the admiration and esteem of

3-17     the Texas Senate.
