1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 568 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 join the family and friends of Gilbert Turrieta in extending 1-5 congratulations to him as he celebrates his 40th birthday on 1-6 April 23, 1997; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The native Texan is the son of Jose and 1-8 Maria Elena Turrieta and was born at Southwestern General Hospital 1-9 in El Paso on April 23, 1957; and 1-10 WHEREAS, An exceptional athlete, Gilbert played 1-11 Little League baseball, basketball, and football as a youngster 1-12 and lettered in football during his junior high school and high 1-13 school days; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A diehard Washington Redskins fan, Gilbert has 1-15 never outgrown his love for sports and keeps in shape playing on 1-16 the men's rugby teams in Houston and Austin; he was a member of 1-17 the Racing Slicks rowing team in 1987 through 1989, and everyone's 1-18 favorite amateur athlete even finds time to enjoy jogging, hunting, 1-19 fishing, traveling, and snow skiing; and 1-20 WHEREAS, After graduating from Bel Air High School in 1-21 El Paso, Gilbert attended the University of North Texas, where 1-22 he earned a bachelor of arts degree in finance and accounting; 1-23 not quite through with his formal education, he attended 2-1 The University of Texas at El Paso and Saint Edwards University 2-2 in Austin to hone his business skills; and 2-3 WHEREAS, An honest and hardworking fellow with a great 2-4 sense of humor, Gilbert earned the admiration of his colleagues 2-5 while working for the Houston Chamber of Commerce and the Texas 2-6 Medical Association; after a stint with the Legislative Budget 2-7 Board, he is currently an independent lobbyist and a partner in 2-8 Capitol Cleaners and Tailors in Austin; and 2-9 WHEREAS, He has acquired more aliases than a bank robber 2-10 and his descriptive nicknames include "Pony," "Pench," "Lefty," 2-11 and "Poncho"; and 2-12 WHEREAS, For his 40th birthday, Gilbert went "middle-aged 2-13 crazy" and bought a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, proving he is 2-14 still a kid at heart; as his friends would say, "there's a man 2-15 with too much disposable income"; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A man of many diverse talents, Gilbert devotes 2-17 hours of his leisure time to civic endeavors; he is on the boards 2-18 of the Live Oak Theater and KLRU Austin City Limits Gala and 2-19 is a member of the Seton Forum, Austin Lyric Opera, and the Dirty 2-20 Laundry Buyers' Group, to name a few; and 2-21 WHEREAS, A member of the Austin-Travis County Livestock 2-22 Show and Rodeo Board, "Pony" enjoys ranching and horses; his 2-23 experience in finance came in handy when he bought cattle high 2-24 and sold low; and 2-25 WHEREAS, This auspicious turning point in the life and 3-1 career of "Lefty" Turrieta truly deserves legislative recognition; 3-2 now, therefore, be it 3-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-4 75th Legislature, hereby extend happy birthday greetings to 3-5 Gilbert Turrieta on this auspicious occasion; and, be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented to 3-7 him as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate. 3-8 Cain 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 President of the Senate 3-11 I hereby certify that the above 3-12 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-13 on April 23, 1997. 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 Secretary of the Senate 3-16 ______________________________________ 3-17 Member, Texas Senate
