 1-4                                     of

 1-5                           Iantha Louise Phillips

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of Houston in mourning the loss of Mrs. Iantha Louise Phillips, who

 1-8     died on April 24, 1997, at the age of 70; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born on August 27, 1926, in Dobbin, Texas, she

1-10     was the daughter of the late Henry and Edna Neal; while attending

1-11     Saint Beulah Baptist Church in Dobbin, she confessed to Christ at

1-12     an early age; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Graduating from Montgomery High School in

1-14     Montgomery as class valedictorian, she received a four-year

1-15     academic scholarship to Huston-Tillotson College in Austin, Texas;

1-16     she worked part-time to supplement her income and received her

1-17     bachelor of science degree in mathematics in 1948; she began her

1-18     teaching career soon thereafter; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips affected positively the lives of

1-20     thousands of students while she was teaching at many different

1-21     elementary and middle schools in Houston; she retired from teaching

1-22     in 1995; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Receiving her master of education degree from

 2-1     Texas Southern University in 1965, she accumulated 72 hours toward

 2-2     her doctoral degree while she attended the University of Houston

 2-3     and Lamar University; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, A dedicated and exceptional master teacher,

 2-5     Mrs. Phillips had more than 40 years of teaching experience;

 2-6     she belonged to many professional associations, including the

 2-7     National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association,

 2-8     and Houston Teachers Association; she also was a member of the

 2-9     Association for Childhood Education/Learning Disabilities and of

2-10     the International Reading Association; and

2-11           WHEREAS, Highly respected in her profession, she was

2-12     voted Outstanding Teacher of the Year by her peers in 1973-1974;

2-13     she achieved Career Ladder III because of proven success and

2-14     assessments; in the 1992-1993 school year, she was again chosen

2-15     Outstanding Teacher of the Year by her colleagues at Turner

2-16     Elementary School; and

2-17           WHEREAS, Iantha Louise Phillips was an exemplary role model

2-18     who guided her students with firmness, fairness, and love; and

2-19           WHEREAS, A respected and  beloved member of her community,

2-20     Mrs. Phillips will be remembered for her devotion to her family,

2-21     friends, profession, and community; she leaves behind a legacy of

2-22     compassion and commitment that will be cherished by those who knew

2-23     and loved her; now, therefore, be it

2-24           RESOLVED, That the Senate of Texas, 75th Legislature,

2-25     hereby extend sincere condolences to the members of her family:

 3-1     her son, Gerry V. Ransom; her daughters, Judith A. Elam and

 3-2     W. Louise Williams; her brother, Lawrence Neal; her sisters,

 3-3     Katie Mae Brewer and Pauline Dean; and her four granddaughters;

 3-4     and, be it further

 3-5           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

 3-6     the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from

 3-7     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it

 3-8     do so in memory of Iantha L. Phillips.
