 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 650

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in

 1-4     recognizing Sadie Beth Ewing Smallwood on the occasion of her

 1-5     retirement from the Austin Independent School District after 30

 1-6     years of exemplary service; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, A business teacher at Crockett High School since it

 1-8     opened in 1968, Mrs. Smallwood also taught at Travis High School

 1-9     in 1967; during her tenure in Austin, she taught under five

1-10     superintendents; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Noted for her superior work, she has had a positive

1-12     influence on her pupils who have benefitted from her careful

1-13     attention and excellent teaching methods; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Born in Gorman, Texas, Mrs. Smallwood graduated from

1-15     Phillips High School in 1956; she earned her bachelor of science and

1-16     master of science degrees from North Texas State College and taught

1-17     business courses at Howard Payne University before moving to Austin

1-18     in 1964; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Mrs. Smallwood has contributed immeasurably to

1-20     community endeavors and has served on the board of directors of the

1-21     Austin Area Teachers Federal Credit Union since 1985; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Throughout her career, she has taken an interest

1-23     in improving business education; she authored Essential Elements

 2-1     in Business for the Texas Education Agency and is a member of

 2-2     the Review Committee for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for

 2-3     Business; she is also a past president of the Texas Business

 2-4     Educators Association; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, An inveterate traveler, Mrs. Smallwood has toured

 2-6     Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, the Far East, and Hawaii and

 2-7     has traveled extensively throughout the United States with her

 2-8     family; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, Her dedication to her profession earned the

2-10     admiration and respect of all those who were associated with her

2-11     and who benefitted from her work; in 1978 she was honored with the

2-12     District Business Teacher of the Year award; now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-14     75th Legislature, hereby commend Sadie Beth Ewing Smallwood for

2-15     her valuable contributions to the educational system of Texas and

2-16     extend best wishes to her for a most rewarding retirement; and, be

2-17     it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-19     distinguished educator as an expression of the high regard of the

2-20     Texas Senate.
