 1-4                                     of

 1-5                              Kenneth Lee Sawin

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins

 1-7     the citizens of Lockhart in mourning the untimely loss of

 1-8     Kenneth Lee Sawin, who died April 28, 1997, at the age of 54;

 1-9     and

1-10           WHEREAS, Born January 18, 1943, in Bellevue, Ohio,

1-11     Ken Sawin received a master's degree in science from Northern

1-12     Arizona University in 1974; he then carved out a highly successful

1-13     career in the field of education, serving as a coach, teacher, and

1-14     principal; and

1-15           WHEREAS, His many professional experiences included serving

1-16     as a National Football League football scout, personnel director

1-17     for Canyon Independent School District, athletic director at

1-18     West Texas State University, and government teacher and head

1-19     football coach at Douglas High School in Douglas, Arizona, where

1-20     he led teams to two state championships; he also served as

1-21     principal at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch located north of Amarillo;

1-22     and

1-23           WHEREAS, Ken Sawin was unanimously selected by the school

 2-1     board in 1993 to the position of principal of Lockhart High School,

 2-2     where he served until the time of his death; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, An enormously popular principal, Ken Sawin

 2-4     was beloved and respected by the students and by the faculty

 2-5     at Lockhart High School; he was known for his vibrant and

 2-6     enthusiastic personality and for his tremendous leadership

 2-7     ability; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, A skilled administrator with a warm sense of

 2-9     humor, Ken Sawin had a unique rapport with his students who greatly

2-10     benefitted from his concern for the individual and his wise counsel

2-11     and encouragement; and

2-12           WHEREAS, An exemplary gentleman, Ken Sawin was respected in

2-13     the community for his leadership, his dedication to his profession,

2-14     and his many accomplishments on behalf of the youths of Texas; and

2-15           WHEREAS, An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, Mr. Sawin

2-16     enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an active person who lived

2-17     his life to the fullest; and

2-18           WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, compassion, and

2-19     generosity, Ken Sawin gave unselfishly of his time to others, and

2-20     his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by

2-21     those who knew him; and

2-22           WHEREAS, Ken Sawin was a devoted husband and father, and he

2-23     leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family

2-24     and many friends; now, therefore, be it

2-25           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 3-1     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved

 3-2     family of Kenneth Lee Sawin:  his wife, Carol Williams Sawin; his

 3-3     daughter, Kodi Elizabeth Sawin; his sons and daughter-in-law, Joe

 3-4     and Sonya Sawin and Clint Williams Sawin; and his brother,

 3-5     Dean Sawin; and, be it further

 3-6           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

 3-7     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy

 3-8     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,

 3-9     it do so in memory of Ken Sawin.
