1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 689 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud 1-4 to recognize Dr. Napoleon B. Lewis, Sr., who is retiring after 1-5 49 years of outstanding service in the field of education; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Born in Oakwood, Texas, Dr. Lewis earned his 1-7 master's degree in education from New York University and his 1-8 doctorate in education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and 1-9 State University; he has participated in postgraduate studies 1-10 at several other universities; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis began his exceptional career as a 1-12 teacher at Sterling Vocational High School in Washington, D.C., 1-13 in January of 1948; he later served as a principal at several 1-14 schools in Washington, D.C., and as a superintendent for the 1-15 Public Schools of the District of Columbia; and 1-16 WHEREAS, He joined the Dallas Independent School 1-17 District in 1977 and became the principal and chief executive 1-18 officer of Lincoln High School/Humanities and Communications, 1-19 a school at which academic excellence and cultural awareness 1-20 are of paramount importance; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his profession and to the youths of 1-22 Texas, Dr. Lewis has provided superior leadership at Lincoln High 1-23 School, and he has played a major role in making the school the 2-1 exceptional educational institution it is today; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Proclaimed one of the most effective principals 2-3 in the nation, Dr. Lewis was selected to be a Harvard University 2-4 Conversationalist in 1987 and was asked at the event to make 2-5 recommendations for schools across the country; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Through Dr. Lewis's guidance and expertise, 2-7 innumerable students have distinguished themselves in their 2-8 professional careers, and in public service throughout the 2-9 nation; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Lewis has earned numerous accolades for his 2-11 professional achievements in education, including the Texas Peace 2-12 Officers' Educator of the Year Award in 1993, the Juanita Craft 2-13 Award for Excellence in Education in 1990, and the National 2-14 Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Educator 2-15 of the Year Award in 1993; he is the first and only person to have 2-16 a chapter of the NAACP named in his honor while still living; now, 2-17 therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-19 75th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Napoleon B.
