 1-4                                     of

 1-5                           Gladys Youngblood Ross

 1-6           WHEREAS, On February 22, 1996, Gladys Youngblood Ross,

 1-7     a resident of Johnson County passed away at the age of 91, and

 1-8     the Texas Senate would like to pay tribute to her; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, A native Texan, she was born in the Salem community

1-10     in Johnson County; Mrs. Ross' parents, Walter and Alice Youngblood,

1-11     and grandparents were prominent landowners in the community; and

1-12           WHEREAS, A woman with a strong sense of tradition, Mrs. Ross

1-13     had been an owner and operator of cattle and agricultural farms

1-14     in Johnson and Hill counties; at the time of her death, she had

1-15     maintained an interest in land which had been in the Youngblood

1-16     and Ross families for 119 years; and

1-17           WHEREAS, One of her most cherished memories from her

1-18     childhood was when she joined Salem Baptist Church and was baptized

1-19     in Chambers Creek on property owned by her grandfather; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Gladys Youngblood married Robert P. Ross on

1-21     November 5, 1925; the couple created a warm and loving home

1-22     for their children; her husband predeceased her in 1967; and

1-23           WHEREAS, A woman of independence and mettle, Mrs. Ross

 2-1     continued to manage her family's land until 1982, when she

 2-2     turned it over to others; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Mrs. Ross had been a member of the First Baptist

 2-4     Church of Grandview since 1924, and she read her Bible daily

 2-5     until her eyesight began to fail; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, One of her community's greatest assets, Mrs. Ross

 2-7     provided knowledgeable leadership and contributed a great deal

 2-8     to the community of Grandview; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, A talented woman of many accomplishments, Mrs. Ross

2-10     was hardworking and ingenious; her dignity and charm beguiled all

2-11     who knew her; and

2-12           WHEREAS, A respected and beloved member of her community,

2-13     city, and state, she will be remembered for her leadership,

2-14     generosity of spirit, love of family, and zest for life; now,

2-15     therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-17     75th Legislature, hereby honor the life of Gladys Youngblood Ross

2-18     and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family:  her

2-19     daughter, Bobbie Ross Washmon; her son, Joe Pitts Ross; and her

2-20     four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-22     loved ones of Gladys Youngblood Ross as an expression of the deepest

2-23     sympathy of the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns

2-24     this day, it do so in memory of Gladys Youngblood Ross.
