 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 700

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to honor Dr. Frank Bash of

 1-4     The University of Texas at Austin for his remarkable accomplishments

 1-5     in the field of astronomy; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Dr. Bash has played a pivotal role in the planning,

 1-7     design, funding, and construction of the magnificent Hobby-Eberly

 1-8     Telescope, which will be one of the finest instruments of its kind

 1-9     in the world when it is completed this year, and he brought to this

1-10     groundbreaking endeavor the dedication, vision, and leadership that

1-11     have been his hallmarks throughout his professional career; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Dr. Bash quickly established a reputation

1-13     for excellence in the classroom after joining the faculty of

1-14     The University of Texas at Austin in 1969; he was equally adept

1-15     at administration and served with distinction as chairman of the

1-16     Department of Astronomy from 1982 through 1986; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Dr. Bash has received a number of well-deserved

1-18     accolades in recognition of his superb achievements as an

1-19     educator; in 1984 he was selected for inclusion in the Teaching

1-20     Excellence Hall of Fame at The University of Texas at Austin,

1-21     and the following year he was named the Frank N. Edmonds Regents

1-22     Professor of Astronomy; and

1-23           WHEREAS, He became director of the McDonald Observatory in

 2-1     1989, and his tenure in that demanding role has been notable for

 2-2     its public outreach initiatives, including the observatory's

 2-3     visitors' center and the StarDate and Universo radio programs,

 2-4     which bring information about astronomy and science to millions

 2-5     of people each day in English, Spanish, and German; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Throughout history, humankind has sought

 2-7     to unravel the secrets of the universe, and Dr. Frank Bash's

 2-8     continuing commitment to analyzing and understanding these great

 2-9     mysteries makes him truly worthy of special legislative recognition

2-10     at this time; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-12     75th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Frank Bash for his many

2-13     significant contributions in the field of astronomy, particularly

2-14     his role in the realization of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and

2-15     extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success in the

2-16     future; and, be it further

2-17           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

2-18     prepared for Dr. Bash as an expression of highest regard from

2-19     the Texas Senate.
