1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 708

        1-2           WHEREAS, The children of today are the citizens and

        1-3     leaders of tomorrow, and the economic future and well-being of

        1-4     the State of Texas lie with the education, initiative, and ability

        1-5     of its young people; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, National Black Child Development Week this year is

        1-7     May 11 through May 17, 1997; and

        1-8           WHEREAS, The National Black Child Development Institute is a

        1-9     nonprofit, national, charitable organization devoted to improving

       1-10     the quality of life of African American children and youth; and

       1-11           WHEREAS, The institute concentrates on child care/early

       1-12     childhood education, child welfare, and health; and

       1-13           WHEREAS, The institute strives to assist African American

       1-14     children and their families by tutoring children to achieve

       1-15     academically, researching issues, and producing resources to aid

       1-16     parent and human resource providers; and

       1-17           WHEREAS, The National Black Child Development Institute

       1-18     believes that every African American child has the right to live,

       1-19     learn, and grow in a safe environment, that African American parents

       1-20     should become involved in the programs which affect the development

       1-21     of their children, and that the optimum development of their children

       1-22     requires organized and effective action by the African American

       1-23     community to achieve these ends; now, therefore, be it

        2-1           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas hereby declare

        2-2     May 11 through May 17, 1997, National Black Child Development Week

        2-3     in Texas; and, be it further

        2-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

        2-5     Dallas members of the National Black Child Development Institute

        2-6     as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
