1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 714 1-2 WHEREAS, United States Congressman Tom DeLay has 1-3 distinguished himself as a member of both the Texas and 1-4 United States House of Representatives, and his many years 1-5 of service in this regard are indeed deserving of special 1-6 legislative recognition; and 1-7 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Congressman DeLay currently 1-8 represents the 22nd District of Texas, which includes Brazoria, 1-9 Fort Bend, and Harris counties; he was recently elected to his 1-10 sixth term in office and, as majority whip, he ranks third in the 1-11 leadership hierarchy; and 1-12 WHEREAS, This remarkable Texan began his political career 1-13 in 1978, when he was elected to the first of three terms in the 1-14 Texas House of Representatives; his triumph was especially notable 1-15 in that he was the first Republican ever elected to the house from 1-16 Fort Bend County, and his presence greatly contributed to the 1-17 betterment of this state throughout his fine tenure; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Congressman DeLay is a coauthor of the 1-19 "Contract with America," and he is the founder of Project Relief, 1-20 which advocates the reform of federal regulations and excessive 1-21 government spending; a member of the House Appropriations Committee, 1-22 he also serves on subcommittees for transportation, veterans' 1-23 affairs, housing and urban development, and independent agencies; 2-1 and 2-2 WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, he and his wife, 2-3 Christine DeLay, are residents of Sugar Land, where they raised 2-4 their daughter, Danielle, and are members of the Sugar Creek 2-5 Baptist Church; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Tom DeLay has devoted his life to representing his 2-7 fellow citizens within the framework of the democratic system, and 2-8 the members of this chamber are proud to recognize this dynamic 2-9 Texan for his dedication and commitment to excellence at this time; 2-10 now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-12 75th Legislature, hereby declare May 30, 1997, Tom DeLay Day in 2-13 Texas in honor of this noteworthy individual's longtime service 2-14 to the citizens of the Lone Star State; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-16 prepared for Congressman DeLay as an expression of high regard 2-17 by the Texas Senate. 2-18 Brown 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the above 2-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-23 on May 13, 1997. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 Member, Texas Senate
