 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 722

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to

 1-4     recognize the members of the Park Crest Middle School Science

 1-5     Olympiad Team for winning the 1997 Texas Science Olympiad State

 1-6     Tournament held on February 22 at Pflugerville High School; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Thirty-five schools from around the state competed

 1-8     in the tournament that consisted of 24 academic and engineering

 1-9     events; by virtue of winning first place, the Park Crest team

1-10     qualifies to represent the State of Texas at the National Science

1-11     Olympiad tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The Science Olympiad was created in 1983 as an

1-13     alternative to science fairs and single-discipline tournaments; it

1-14     has grown to include more than 12,000 participants in all 50 states;

1-15     and

1-16           WHEREAS, Through teamwork, group planning, and cooperation,

1-17     students, teachers, coaches, principals, business leaders, and

1-18     parents are all bonded together as a team working toward a goal; and

1-19           WHEREAS, With emphasis on advanced learning in science through

1-20     active, hands-on, group participation, Science Olympiad is devoted

1-21     to improving the quality of science education and increasing student

1-22     interest in science; recognition is given to both students and

1-23     teachers for outstanding achievement in science education; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, The students and their coaches prepare for

 2-2     tournaments on their own time, and their peers, the school faculty,

 2-3     and the community play a vital role in helping the team make their

 2-4     goals become realities; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, The members of the Park Crest Middle School Science

 2-6     Olympiad Team have displayed superior ability and determination;

 2-7     the students and their coaches have brought honor to their school,

 2-8     their community, and their state; now, therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-10     75th Legislature, hereby commend the coaches of the Park Crest

2-11     Middle School Science Olympiad Team, John Thomas, Becky Merkord,

2-12     Adrian Carrales, and Debra Malone, and extend congratulations to the

2-13     following Olympians for their outstanding performances:  Ryan Lawhon,

2-14     Brian Peterson, Krystal Bloemker, Sara Merkord, Jamil Lawrence,

2-15     Mark LaBreyere, Chase Gregory, Ian Moede, Ian Robertson, Ashley Todd,

2-16     Sarah Daniel, Luke DeRosa, Jacob Brown, J. C. Ferguson, Nasim Muller,

2-17     Sarah Sheffield, Brett Williams, and Linoy Mathen; and, be it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-19     Park Crest Middle School as an expression of the esteem of the

2-20     Texas Senate.
