 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                     The Honorable Oscar F. Nelson, Jr.

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins citizens

 1-7     throughout Chambers County in mourning the loss of esteemed

 1-8     County Judge Oscar F. Nelson, Jr., who died February 14, 1997,

 1-9     at the age of 72; and

1-10           WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this

1-11     distinguished gentleman contributed to the development and progress

1-12     of Chambers County, and he will be remembered for his dedication to

1-13     its people; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A native of Anahuac, Oscar Nelson was born on

1-15     January 28, 1924, and attended Texas A&M University and Sam Houston

1-16     State University; he served his country with valor in World War II

1-17     and in Korea as a captain in the United States Army; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Elected to the office of county judge in 1962,

1-19     Judge Nelson served from 1962 to 1977 and was reelected in 1987;

1-20     he worked diligently to improve the quality of life for all the

1-21     residents of the county, and his leadership and knowledge of the

1-22     area helped bring about changes that were beneficial to all; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The owner of several area businesses, Judge Nelson

 2-1     was a highly respected businessman who was a lifelong advocate of

 2-2     economic development; he was responsible for bringing several

 2-3     large businesses as well as many smaller employers to

 2-4     Chambers County; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, He became deeply involved in civic affairs and was

 2-6     active in numerous organizations; for his contributions to his

 2-7     community, Judge Nelson was named Citizen of the Year by the

 2-8     Anahuac Area Chamber of Commerce in 1975 and 1995; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, The passing of such a fine public servant is felt

2-10     not only by his family and friends, but also by the people who

2-11     benefitted from his generosity and community spirit, and it is

2-12     appropriate for the Texas Senate to honor the memory of this

2-13     beloved individual; now, therefore, be it

2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-15     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family

2-16     of Judge Oscar Nelson:  his wife, LaVerne; his sons,

2-17     Randall S. Nelson and W. F. "Ted" Nelson; his brother, Gene Nelson;

2-18     his sister, Margie Nelson Thames; and his five grandchildren;

2-19     and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his

2-21     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,

2-22     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-23     Oscar F. Nelson, Jr.
