1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 737 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Margaret L. "Peggy" Simmons for her 13-year 1-5 tenure as Head of School at Trinity School in Midland, Texas; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Peggy Simmons received her bachelor's degree 1-7 from Sweetbriar College and her master's degree from Ohio State 1-8 University; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Peggy Simmons is married to Dr. Charles Simmons and 1-10 together they have seven children and seven grandchildren; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Upon her arrival at the school in 1984, opening 1-12 enrollment was 443 students and is now 585 students; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Despite unpredictable West Texas weather conditions, 1-14 Peggy Simmons offers curbside greeting to every arriving student at 1-15 Trinity School every morning; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Well known for conservative views and frugality, 1-17 she boasts a colorful shoe collection that is the envy of every 1-18 little girl aching to wear high heels; and 1-19 WHEREAS, To the dismay of many adolescents and a few 1-20 parents, she coined the phrase, "turn off your T.V., turn on your 1-21 mind," which later appeared on many refrigerator doors and many car 1-22 bumpers; and 1-23 WHEREAS, She congratulated Trinity's first graduating class 2-1 in 1991, and, in less than a decade, the school boasts of graduating 2-2 seven Merit Scholarship Finalists; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Her poetry fills the hearts and memory boxes of her 2-4 students, her instructors, and her board members; and 2-5 WHEREAS, She encourages a child's individuality and 2-6 creativity, believing with foresight beyond parental frustrations, 2-7 that all children have the ability to give to the common good, while 2-8 achieving the scope of their goals; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Although she values intellectual pursuits, 2-10 challenges, and achievements, perhaps her greatest contributions 2-11 to her students are her ideals of integrity, loyalty, and kindness 2-12 to one another; she is a living example of the Christian concept known 2-13 as the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto 2-14 you"; and 2-15 WHEREAS, She continually reminds every parent that 2-16 children are never "finished" and all students that they are 2-17 always cherished; and 2-18 WHEREAS, A Texas flag flies above the Capitol of the 2-19 State of Texas on this day to mark the observance of Peggy Simmons 2-20 Day at Trinity School in Midland Texas; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 75th Legislature, hereby offer its gratitude to Margaret L.
