 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 751

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is especially

 1-4     proud to recognize the Fort Bend County Library on the grand

 1-5     occasion of its 50th anniversary; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Citizens from around Fort Bend County will

 1-7     attend a special ceremony on May 18, 1997, to commemorate the

 1-8     establishment of its first library; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, A group of 12 women from Rosenberg and Richmond,

1-10     who were members of the Share-a-Book Club, received approval

1-11     from the commissioners court for the creation of a library and

1-12     for the purchase of a bookmobile to serve the residents of

1-13     Fort Bend County on May 12, 1947; and

1-14           WHEREAS, The Rosenberg City Hall was used originally for

1-15     the library until the first library building was completed on

1-16     July 7, 1949, on land donated by Albert and Mamie George; the

1-17     library continued to expand through the years, and in 1974 the

1-18     Mamie George Branch in Stafford and the Albert George Branch in

1-19     Needville were added to the library system in honor of the first

1-20     benefactors; and

1-21           WHEREAS, The present library was completed in 1986, and

1-22     the Fort Bend County Library System has expanded its readership

1-23     with additional branches in Missouri City and First Colony;

 2-1     residents of Simonton and Fulshear are served by a mini-branch,

 2-2     and the library system also operates the County Law Library and

 2-3     several Distance Learning and Telecommunications Centers in

 2-4     Fort Bend County; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Surviving members of the Share-a-Book

 2-6     Club who will be attending the 50th anniversary ceremony are

 2-7     Mrs. Lillian Meyer, Mrs. Mayde Waddell Butler, Mrs. Kathleen Lindsey,

 2-8     Mrs. Doris Erwin, and Mrs. Marjorie Balke Vogelsang; others who

 2-9     contributed to the success of the library are Mrs. Fern Garmany and

2-10     Mrs. Viola Yates; descendants of cofounders Emma Lee Schawe Dickerson,

2-11     Mrs. Alvin E. Hockmuth, Maude Wallace Knipling, Ruth Beckmann Schult,

2-12     and Mrs. Angela Joeger McNutt will also attend the notable event

2-13     that will bring together members of the community to share this

2-14     special commemoration; and

2-15           WHEREAS, The various functions of the Fort Bend County

2-16     Library System are designed to enrich the lives of all the

2-17     residents of the county, and those who made the library possible

2-18     are truly deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore,

2-19     be it

2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-21     75th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the directors and

2-22     surviving founders of the Fort Bend County Library System for a

2-23     most enjoyable 50th anniversary celebration; and, be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-25     the distinguished group as an expression of the appreciation and

 3-1     esteem of the Texas Senate.
