1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 752

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing the

        1-3     Texas Historical Commission, which celebrates the 35th anniversary

        1-4     of its Official Texas Historical Marker Program this year; this

        1-5     notable program has been used as a model for programs in 17 states

        1-6     and one Canadian province; and

        1-7           WHEREAS, The program was started in 1962, and the Texas

        1-8     Historical Commission has placed over 12,000 markers throughout

        1-9     the 254 counties of Texas, and at the same time it has maintained

       1-10     other markers and memorials created in Texas during the 1936 Texas

       1-11     Centennial celebration; and

       1-12           WHEREAS, The Historical Markers 2000 project is a new program

       1-13     begun by the Texas Historical Commission to survey all and repair

       1-14     many of the state's 12,000 Official Texas Historical Markers; and

       1-15           WHEREAS, This worthwhile plan was begun in early 1996;

       1-16     the initiative will result in the publication of seven regional

       1-17     historical marker guidebooks and a computer database of information

       1-18     that will be available through the Internet to the general public,

       1-19     local and regional governments, and researchers; also, markers

       1-20     which have faded will be refinished; and

       1-21           WHEREAS, This extensive project will promote heritage

       1-22     tourism, increase interest and knowledge about historical events in

       1-23     Texas, restore many markers to their original condition, and bring

        2-1     local Texas history to the user's fingertips; and

        2-2           WHEREAS, The project will also link historical information

        2-3     with archeological sites, museums, national register sites, and

        2-4     county courthouses; and

        2-5           WHEREAS, The most important goal of the marker program is the

        2-6     preservation of local, oral, written, or photographic history; the

        2-7     markers truly impart the people's history of the State of Texas;

        2-8     now, therefore, be it

        2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       2-10     75th Legislature, hereby commend the Texas Historical Commission

       2-11     on its outstanding preservation work and recognize May 20, 1997,

       2-12     as Historical Markers Day in Texas; and, be it further

       2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

       2-14     commission as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
