1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 760 1-2 WHEREAS, Wetlands provide a variety of ecological functions 1-3 to humans and to the natural ecosystem that are now widely 1-4 recognized as beneficial; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Areas that connect deep water and land, wetlands 1-6 can be of several different types; wetlands may be fed by both fresh 1-7 water and salt water in some coastal areas; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Some of the beneficial functions of wetlands include 1-9 flood control, erosion control, fish and wildlife habitat, outdoor 1-10 recreation, and the filtering of pollutants; and 1-11 WHEREAS, In the State of Texas, most wetlands are 1-12 concentrated in East Texas and near the Gulf of Mexico; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Wetlands provide essential nesting, migratory, 1-14 and wintering areas for more than 50 percent of the migratory 1-15 bird species in the country; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Texas is one of the most important waterfowl 1-17 wintering areas, and it furnishes habitat for one-third of the 1-18 federally listed endangered plant and animal species; now, 1-19 therefore, be it 1-20 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-21 75th Legislature, hereby declare May, 1997, as Wetlands Month 1-22 in Texas and encourage public awareness of the importance of the 1-23 wetlands in Texas. 2-1 Patterson 2-2 ______________________________________ 2-3 President of the Senate 2-4 I hereby certify that the above 2-5 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-6 on May 16, 1997. 2-7 ______________________________________ 2-8 Secretary of the Senate 2-9 ______________________________________ 2-10 Member, Texas Senate
