1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 768

        1-2           WHEREAS, With kites soaring high above them in Jones

        1-3     Stadium, the schoolchildren in El Paso kicked off the Presidents'

        1-4     Summit for America's Future in a symbolic gesture; and

        1-5           WHEREAS, Held in Philadelphia from April 27 through

        1-6     April 29, 1997, the summit was created through the Points of

        1-7     Light Foundation founded by former President George Bush; and

        1-8           WHEREAS, The meeting of community leaders from around the

        1-9     nation represented 150 United States cities with 66 delegates from

       1-10     Texas attending; professionals from various service organization

       1-11     fields met to share their ideas concerning youth education and

       1-12     success-oriented programs; and

       1-13           WHEREAS, Among those attending the historic event from

       1-14     El Paso were:  Juanita McCray, El Paso family support coordinator;

       1-15     John Brooks, Young Men's Christian Association of El Paso chief

       1-16     executive officer; Salvador Balcorta, executive chief director

       1-17     of Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe; Sonny Brown, president of

       1-18     Sonny Brown Associates; Winifred Dowling, aging services

       1-19     administrator of the City's Retired Senior Volunteer Program/Foster

       1-20     Grandparent Program; Rosario Piedra, director of Latch Key Centers;

       1-21     Rob Keast, Volunteers In Service To America volunteer for the

       1-22     Coalition for the Homeless; Mona Izquierdo, Communities in Schools

       1-23     special projects/public relations director; and Wesley Bell,

        2-1     founding director of Casas por Cristo; and

        2-2           WHEREAS, The Presidents' Summit for America's Future is a

        2-3     golden opportunity for these delegates to inform other areas of the

        2-4     country of what is happening on the border between Texas and Mexico

        2-5     and to expose others to the border culture; and

        2-6           WHEREAS, The group's agenda included ideas contributed

        2-7     by students in an effort to make the voices of young El Pasoans

        2-8     heard; the exchange of experiences between other young people

        2-9     attending the conference will further understanding among

       2-10     students of different backgrounds; now, therefore, be it

       2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       2-12     75th Legislature, hereby commend the participants from El Paso

       2-13     to the Presidents' Summit for America's Future and extend best

       2-14     wishes for continued success in all their endeavors to improve

       2-15     the education of our state's youth; and, be it further

       2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

       2-17     the group as an expression of the high regard and appreciation of

       2-18     the Texas Senate.
