 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 771

 1-3           WHEREAS, On August 17, 1996, the City of San Antonio welcomed

 1-4     home its newest and brightest young hero, Joshua Clark Davis, on

 1-5     his return from the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he

 1-6     captured three team gold medals in swimming events; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The San Antonio native is the only male athlete to

 1-8     win three gold medals at the Centennial Summer Olympic Games;

 1-9     Josh Davis is a member of the United States National Swimming Team,

1-10     and his remarkable performances in competition came in the 4x200

1-11     and 4x100-meter relays and in the 4x100 individual medley; and

1-12           WHEREAS, In recognition of his brilliant achievement at the

1-13     Centennial Summer Olympics, Josh was named Sportsman of the Year

1-14     for 1996 by the San Antonio Express-News, an honor he treasures

1-15     as highly as winning his gold medals; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Joshua Davis is believed to be the first native

1-17     San Antonian to win an Olympic gold medal in any sport and is

1-18     the first San Antonio high school graduate to make a United States

1-19     Olympic swimming team; and

1-20           WHEREAS, A 1990 graduate of Churchill High School, Josh Davis

1-21     was a member of the school's male swimming team that won the

1-22     Texas State Swimming Championships each of the four years he

1-23     competed with the team; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, The son of Joan and Michael D. Davis of San Antonio,

 2-2     Josh is married to the former Shantel Cornelius; the couple is

 2-3     attending The University of Texas at Austin, where Josh is

 2-4     completing his final semester majoring in speech and communication

 2-5     and Shantel is a senior member of the women's volleyball team; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, His leadership, determination, and ability to

 2-7     perform his best under pressure have combined to make this

 2-8     All-American an exemplary athlete who is a credit to his team, his

 2-9     family, his town, and his state; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-11     75th Legislature, hereby extend heartfelt congratulations to

2-12     Joshua Clark Davis for his magnificent accomplishments at the 1996

2-13     Summer Olympic Games and extend best wishes to him for continued

2-14     success in the next Summer Olympics, in Sydney, Australia; and, be

2-15     it further

2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-17     this distinguished Texan as an expression of the high esteem of the

2-18     Texas Senate.
