 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 782

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to

 1-4     recognize the eminent actor Edward Asner on the occasion of his

 1-5     visit to the Texas State Capitol; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, A well-known actor and activist, Mr. Asner plans to

 1-7     film a public service announcement supporting the Austin Emergency

 1-8     Medical Services and the organization of the Fourth Annual CPR

 1-9     Saturday; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Born on November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri,

1-11     he was the youngest of five children; he grew up in Kansas City,

1-12     Kansas; after his graduation from high school, he enrolled at the

1-13     University of Chicago, playing Thomas a Becket in "Murder in the

1-14     Cathedral"; and

1-15           WHEREAS, A member of the university's drama group, Tonight

1-16     at Eight-Thirty, the young Mr. Asner was directed by the young

1-17     Mike Nichols in works by Yeats and Shaw; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Serving his country honorably for two years in the

1-19     United States Army, he immediately returned to Chicago to join

1-20     The Playwrights Theater Club following his discharge; and

1-21           WHEREAS, In two years, he followed his muse to the New York

1-22     stage, where he appeared with Jack Lemmon in "Face of a Hero";

1-23     Mr. Asner appeared in the New York and American Shakespeare

 2-1     Festivals, and he performed in many off-Broadway productions; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, After moving to Hollywood in 1961, Edward Asner

 2-3     began to garner more parts and become an expert in his craft; he

 2-4     played many parts in both comedy and drama, and he appeared in

 2-5     many motion pictures; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, One of his most famous parts was the role of the

 2-7     gruff but lovable Mr. Grant on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" that

 2-8     ran for seven years; his next role was in another television

 2-9     series, "Lou Grant," that ran for five years; he has consistently

2-10     excelled in his appearances in movies, television, cable movies,

2-11     television series, and cable miniseries; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Mr. Asner has been the recipient of five Golden

2-13     Globes and seven Emmys; he has served as the National President

2-14     of the Screen Actors Guild for two terms and was inducted into

2-15     the TV Academy Hall of Fame in 1996; and

2-16           WHEREAS, Today, Edward Asner can be heard on the "Batman"

2-17     animated series, "Captain Planet" cartoon series, "Spiderman,"

2-18     and "Gargoyles"; he divides his time between acting and working

2-19     on behalf of humanitarian, political, and charitable organizations;

2-20     a man such as this is truly worthy of legislative recognition; now,

2-21     therefore, be it

2-22           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-23     75th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the career of

2-24     Edward Asner and welcome his contributions with great enthusiasm;

2-25     and, be it further

 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

 3-2     prepared for the notable Mr. Asner as an expression of the high

 3-3     regard and esteem of the Texas Senate.
