 1-5                              John C. Rodriguez

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of San Antonio in mourning the loss of John C. Rodriguez, who died

 1-8     April 17, 1997; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born in 1928 into a family that loved music and

1-10     encouraged John's innate aptitude, he began playing professionally

1-11     with his family from the early age of seven; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The accomplished musician, whose instruments became

1-13     the trumpet and violin, traveled extensively with his parents, the

1-14     late Juan C. and Maria Guerra Rodriguez, and his brother and sister,

1-15     Carlos and Gloria; the small family musical group entertained Texans

1-16     across our state and provided the nurturing that enhanced the

1-17     artistry of their award-winning child; and

1-18           WHEREAS, He served in the United States Navy and the

1-19     United States Air Force, and in 1952 he received his bachelor of

1-20     music degree from Our Lady of the Lake University and his master's

1-21     degree in 1955 from The University of Texas; and

1-22           WHEREAS, With 32 years of service in the San Antonio

1-23     Independent School District teaching music and as band director

 2-1     at Sidney Lanier High School, where years earlier he had attended

 2-2     as a student, John C. Rodriguez retired in 1987; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, John C. Rodriguez gained many awards and honors as

 2-4     both a performing musician and as a highly acclaimed music educator

 2-5     and was a life member of the Musicians Society of San Antonio Local

 2-6     Number 23; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Retaining a cherished place in the hearts of all

 2-8     who knew him, John Rodriguez bequeaths a lasting legacy to his family

 2-9     and friends of his belief in the beauty of self-expression wherever

2-10     it may thrive:  in the family, on the world stage, or in the chambers

2-11     of the great institutions; and

2-12           WHEREAS, When a friend and cherished companion leaves our

2-13     side, the bounty of what he gave is undeniable; now, therefore, be

2-14     it

2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-16     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved

2-17     family of John C. Rodriguez:  his wife, Helen Rodriguez; his sons

2-18     and daughters-in-law, Roland and Genevieve Rodriguez and Gerald

2-19     and Cynthia Rodriguez; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rosina and

2-20     Jack Brinkman, Melissa and Henry Bustamante; his grandchildren,

2-21     Aubran, Jolly, Erika, David, Sarah, Briana, and Eileen; his sister

2-22     and brother-in-law, Gloria and Joe F. Gonzalez; and his brother,

2-23     Carlos Rodriguez; and, be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-25     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from

 3-1     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do

 3-2     so in memory of John C. Rodriguez.
