1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 815

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

        1-3     joining the citizens of Greenville in observing June 2, 1997, as

        1-4     Audie Murphy Day; and

        1-5           WHEREAS, A Hunt County native, Major Audie L. Murphy became

        1-6     the most decorated combat soldier of World War II; he was awarded 27

        1-7     medals, including the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military

        1-8     award, which he received at the age of 20 on June 2, 1945; and

        1-9           WHEREAS, Major Murphy's Medal of Honor citation credits him

       1-10     with single-handedly holding off two enemy rifle companies for

       1-11     several hours near a village in eastern France; his awards included

       1-12     three medals from France and one from Belgium; and

       1-13           WHEREAS, After returning from the war, Audie Murphy launched

       1-14     a successful career as an actor, starring in more than 40 movies,

       1-15     including his biographical To Hell and Back; the young hero

       1-16     died at the age of 46 in a plane crash; and

       1-17           WHEREAS, As a tribute to his life and to his remarkable

       1-18     courage, the City of Greenville, the Greenville Chamber of Commerce,

       1-19     and the Greenville Postal Customers Advisory Committee are sponsoring

       1-20     the Audie Murphy Day observance on June 2; and

       1-21           WHEREAS, Numerous activities and events will be held in memory

       1-22     of Major Murphy, including a special stamp cancellation, a reception

       1-23     at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center, and a video Film Festival; now,

        2-1     therefore, be it

        2-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

        2-3     75th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Greenville on

        2-4     organizing this special event and extend best wishes to them for

        2-5     an enjoyable Audie Murphy Day; and, be it further

        2-6           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

        2-7     City of Greenville as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
