 1-4                                     of

 1-5                               Bertis Matlock

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the family

 1-7     and many friends of civic leader Bertis Matlock in mourning his

 1-8     untimely death on May 15, 1997, at the age of 58; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Born in Nacogdoches, Bertis was a star football

1-10     player while he attended Nacogdoches High School, and he remained

1-11     a fervent booster of the town and the entire community the rest of

1-12     his life; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A City Commissioner for the Southwest Ward in

1-14     Nacogdoches, Bertis was retired from 25 years of excellent service

1-15     with the postal system; he was an ardent supporter of the fire

1-16     department and the police department of Nacogdoches; and

1-17           WHEREAS, A member of the Deep East Texas Council of

1-18     Governments, Mr. Matlock enthusiastically endorsed the

1-19     Interstate-69 project; and

1-20           WHEREAS, Well known as a barbecue cook, Bertis was famous

1-21     for his cooking trailer, which he would transport from place to

1-22     place in the community, and for donating his own time, talent,

1-23     and money to help with fundraisers for churches and nonprofit

 2-1     organizations; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, A man who believed in giving something back to his

 2-3     community, Bertis was solely responsible for acquiring the rehab

 2-4     vehicle for the fire department, was instrumental in constructing

 2-5     and opening the new Nacogdoches Community Center that houses the

 2-6     library and parks and recreation department, and contributed to

 2-7     the acquisition of two new fire trucks for the fire department; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Bertis Matlock leaves a legacy of compassion and

 2-9     commitment that will be remembered with gratitude by all those who

2-10     knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-12     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family

2-13     of Bertis Matlock:  his daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and

2-14     Mike Daughtry; and his grandchildren, Kasey and Kristoffer Daughtry;

2-15     and, be it further

2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his

2-17     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,

2-18     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-19     Bertis Matlock.
