1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 837
        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pleasure
        1-3     in recognizing the Honorable Jack Evans for his many contributions
        1-4     to the City of Dallas and the State of Texas; and
        1-5           WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Dallas, he was educated at
        1-6     Woodrow Wilson High School and Southern Methodist University; he
        1-7     holds honorary doctorates from the University of North Texas and
        1-8     Oklahoma Christian University; and
        1-9           WHEREAS, A graduate of the management program of Harvard
       1-10     Business School, he served his country honorably in the
       1-11     United States Air Force as an instrument flying instructor; and
       1-12           WHEREAS, A successful businessman, Jack Evans opened 10 Evans
       1-13     Food Marts, which eventually merged with Wyatt Food Stores; the
       1-14     Kroger Company bought the Wyatt stores in 1958; and
       1-15           WHEREAS, A division vice president for Kroger, he left that
       1-16     company and joined Cullum Companies, Incorporated, in 1966 and was
       1-17     elected president and chief operating officer in 1977; in 1986, he
       1-18     was named chairman and chief executive officer of Cullum Companies,
       1-19     Incorporated; and
       1-20           WHEREAS, Today, Mr. Evans is chairman of the board of American
       1-21     Title Company, owner of Jack Evans Investments, and vice chairman
       1-22     for public affairs for Randall's/Tom Thumb; and
       1-23           WHEREAS, A man who believes in giving back to his community,
        2-1     he was mayor of the City of Dallas from 1981 through 1983; he
        2-2     served on the board of trustees of the Dallas Museum of Art, was
        2-3     recipient of the Outstanding Texas Citizen Award from the Exchange
        2-4     Club of Dallas, was past chairman of the Better Business Bureau of
        2-5     Dallas, and was past president of the School Board of Richardson
        2-6     Independent School District; and
        2-7           WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he has been an active member of
        2-8     the Waterview Church of Christ; and
        2-9           WHEREAS, A proven leader who has selflessly devoted himself
       2-10     to a wide range of worthy causes, Jack Evans is certainly worthy of
       2-11     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
       2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
       2-13     75th Legislature, hereby commend the exceptional achievements of
       2-14     Jack Evans; and, be it further
       2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
       2-16     as an expression of the highest esteem of the Texas Senate.
