 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 838

 1-3           WHEREAS, It is a pleasure for the Texas Senate to

 1-4     congratulate Christian Ray Gonzalez on his graduation from

 1-5     The University of Texas at Austin, May 18, 1997; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Christian completed the requirements for a bachelor

 1-7     of journalism degree in news and public affairs; and

 1-8           WHEREAS, This bright young man has worked diligently to

 1-9     obtain his degree and has availed himself of many opportunities

1-10     to advance his knowledge of journalism; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Christian has continued to benefit from the talent

1-12     and integrity of his parents and grandparents; Christian is an

1-13     outstanding musician as was his grandfather Ishmael Gonzalez;

1-14     he has pursued leadership roles among his peers as did his

1-15     grandfather Reyes Olvera, who was the first Hispanic deputy

1-16     sheriff of Travis County; encouraged by his father, Christian

1-17     became a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and is

1-18     currently a member of Sacred Heart Council Number 8141 and the

1-19     Bishop Louis J. Reicher 4th Degree Assembly; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The women in his family have encouraged him and

1-21     shown him the love that is so important to fulfillment; they are

1-22     his wife, Jodi Nordby Gonzalez; his mother, Teresa Olvera Gonzalez,

1-23     and his grandmothers Cleotilde Olvera of Austin and Cesaria Gonzalez

 2-1     of San Antonio; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Christian is the first person in his family to

 2-3     graduate from a university; it has been a course of study always

 2-4     accompanied by work in the field; starting as an editorial

 2-5     columnist for Crockett High School's newspaper, The Courier,

 2-6     he was later employed for many years with the Austin

 2-7     American-Statesman, and in 1993 awarded a yearlong internship

 2-8     in Washington, D.C., with the national newsweekly Hispanic Link

 2-9     Weekly Report; and

2-10           WHEREAS, During the 74th Legislative Session, he worked

2-11     part-time as the typesetter for the Senate Journal; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Christian has returned for the 75th Legislative

2-13     Session and will be taking a permanent position with the

2-14     Senate Journal where his teammates consider him a godsend; and

2-15           WHEREAS, Christian is an exemplary young man who is respected

2-16     by his family, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-18     75th Legislature, hereby commend Christian Ray Gonzalez on his

2-19     perseverance and accomplishment; and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-21     him as an expression of the high esteem of the Texas Senate.
