 1-5                                 Roel Garcia

 1-6           WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow that the Texas Senate

 1-7     learned of the tragic loss of Texas Department of Public Safety

 1-8     Trooper Roel Garcia, who died March 26, 1997, at the age of 37; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Highly respected among his colleagues, Corporal Garcia

1-10     had been with the Department of Public Safety since 1981; recently

1-11     assigned to the Combined Law Enforcement Division, he was on his

1-12     way to Raymondville to participate in a drug task force when he

1-13     was killed in a tragic automobile accident; and

1-14           WHEREAS, A native of Falfurrias, Texas, Roel was born on

1-15     August 24, 1959, to Humberto and Elda Garcia; he graduated

1-16     from Falfurrias High School and attended Del Mar College;

1-17     during his youth he lived with his grandfather and grandmother

1-18     in Brooks County, where his grandfather was the Brooks County

1-19     jailer; and

1-20           WHEREAS, He joined the Department of Public Safety in

1-21     June of 1981 and was stationed in El Campo for four years

1-22     before being transferred to Falfurrias; honored for his valuable

1-23     contributions to the citizens of Texas, Mr. Garcia received a

 2-1     Director's Citation in recognition of 20 drug interdiction cases

 2-2     he initiated in 1993; he was also the recipient of numerous

 2-3     commendation letters; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, In addition to his work as a trooper, Corporal Garcia

 2-5     taught courses in the department's specialized schools, including

 2-6     drug interdiction, performance driving, and firearms; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant whose career was highlighted

 2-8     by his accomplishments over the past 16 years, Corporal Garcia will

 2-9     be deeply missed by his fellow officers and all those who were

2-10     privileged to work with him throughout his distinguished career; and

2-11           WHEREAS, The State of Texas has lost one of its most valuable

2-12     citizens, but Roel Garcia's exemplary life will continue to inspire

2-13     those who follow his profession; now, therefore, be it

2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-15     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-16     family of Corporal Roel Garcia:  his daughters, Sarah and Victoria;

2-17     his parents, Humberto and Elda Garcia; his sister, Louella Mora;

2-18     his brothers, Homer and Humberto Garcia, Jr., and his grandmother,

2-19     Elica Garcia; and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his

2-21     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,

2-22     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

2-23     Roel Garcia.
