 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 871

 1-3           WHEREAS, Catherine Holt de Toledo of Fort Worth, Texas,

 1-4     is the 1997 winner of the Belle Chenault Award for Political

 1-5     Participation, and the Texas Senate is pleased to extend

 1-6     congratulations to her for receiving this prestigious honor;

 1-7     and

 1-8           WHEREAS, The award is presented every two years by the

 1-9     American Medical Association's Political Action Committee Board

1-10     of Directors to a member who has made significant personal

1-11     contributions of time and talent in assisting friends of medicine

1-12     in their quest for elective office at the federal and state level;

1-13     and

1-14           WHEREAS, Catherine Toledo assisted six candidates and their

1-15     campaigns during the 1995-1996 elections; she was selected for the

1-16     award on the basis of the value of her activities to each candidate,

1-17     the time committed during the election cycle, and the difficulty

1-18     faced in carrying out the campaign activities; and

1-19           WHEREAS, A member of the Texas Medical Association Alliance,

1-20     Mrs. Toledo served as a volunteer campaign manager and advisor for

1-21     Kay Granger, who was a candidate for the United States House of

1-22     Representatives from Texas' 12th District in 1996; and

1-23           WHEREAS, A graduate of Stanford University with a degree in

 2-1     biology, Mrs. Toledo is a freelance medical writer and the wife of

 2-2     Luiz de Toledo, a specialist in orthopedics and hand surgery; she

 2-3     graduated from the American Medical Association's Political Action

 2-4     Committee Campaign School and attended the 1995 American Medical

 2-5     Association Political Education and Grassroots Conference in

 2-6     Washington, D.C.; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Catherine began her career as a volunteer in Texas

 2-8     politics in 1989, assisting a physician in his campaign for the

 2-9     United States House of Representatives, and she has continued to

2-10     work on numerous campaigns in Texas; and

2-11           WHEREAS, A member of the TEXPAC Board of Directors,

2-12     Mrs. Toledo is a valuable political resource for the Texas

2-13     Medical Association; she has often presented medicine's view to

2-14     her political friends in office at the State Capitol and testified

2-15     before the senate's Interim Committee on Managed Care in 1996; and

2-16           WHEREAS, Mrs. Toledo has twice received the June Bratcher

2-17     Award for Political Action that is given to the member of the

2-18     Texas Medical Association Alliance who exemplifies the highest

2-19     standard of political activism; now, therefore, be it

2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-21     75th Legislature, hereby recognize Catherine Holt de Toledo for

2-22     her exceptional contributions on behalf of organized medicine; and,

2-23     be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-25     her as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
