1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 873

        1-2           WHEREAS, Texas is internationally known as one of the

        1-3     world's preeminent centers of space exploration, and the

        1-4     aerospace industry has established itself as an integral aspect

        1-5     of the history, economy, and culture of the state; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, In 1961 President John F. Kennedy confronted his

        1-7     fellow Americans with the challenge of landing a human being on

        1-8     the moon before the decade's end, and the nation's imagination

        1-9     was captured by the sweep and daring of this ambitious venture; and

       1-10           WHEREAS, Eight years later, astronaut Neil Armstrong became

       1-11     the first man to walk the surface of the moon, and this historic

       1-12     achievement was eloquent testimony to the steadfast dedication and

       1-13     remarkable skill of the men and women of the National Aeronautics

       1-14     and Space Administration (NASA); and

       1-15           WHEREAS, Since that time, Americans have continued to

       1-16     explore outer space, testing the limits of human possibility even

       1-17     as they make immeasurable contributions to our understanding of the

       1-18     universe, and NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston has

       1-19     remained at the forefront of this essential endeavor; and

       1-20           WHEREAS, A vital element of the Lone Star State's stature

       1-21     as an international business mecca, the aerospace industry has also

       1-22     been responsible for a number of the technological advances that

       1-23     have shaped modern civilization and enriched our lives; and

        2-1           WHEREAS, The history of modern Texas is inextricably

        2-2     entwined with that of the aerospace industry, and it is indeed

        2-3     fitting at this time to recognize this crucial component of the

        2-4     state's security and prosperity; now, therefore, be it

        2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 75th Texas Legislature

        2-6     hereby recognize May 25 through May 31, 1997, as Texas Space and

        2-7     Technology Week and extend to all those involved in the aerospace

        2-8     industry sincere best wishes for continued success in the years

        2-9     to come.
