1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 877 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 Pattie Dodson Gilliam 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of Victoria in mourning the loss of Pattie Dodson Gilliam, M.D., 1-8 who died April 2, 1997, at the age of 75; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born May 18, 1921, in Woodsboro, Texas, 1-10 Pattie May Dodson graduated from Woodsboro High School and earned 1-11 her medical degree from The University of Texas at Galveston; she 1-12 married Dr. R. B. Gilliam, who preceded her in death; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Dr. Pattie Dodson began her career in medicine as 1-14 a pediatrician in private practice with her husband; in 1974, she 1-15 joined the Texas Department of Health and served as the director 1-16 of the Victoria City-County Health Department and the Crossroads 1-17 Health District from 1974 to 1995; and 1-18 WHEREAS, During her tenure as director, she established 1-19 the maternity and family planning center that is now 1-20 The University of Texas Medical Branch's Regional Maternity 1-21 Health Center of Victoria; she also created the county's HIV 1-22 program and expanded the public health programs throughout her 1-23 community; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Pattie, as she was affectionately called, 2-2 was noted for establishing and maintaining cooperation among 2-3 city and county governmental agencies and local organizations 2-4 in order to establish effective community health programs, and 2-5 the health departments she created are considered among the best 2-6 in the state; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Dr. Dodson was a highly respected physician who 2-8 deeply cared about each of her patients; she was beloved by her 2-9 colleagues and by area citizens who admired her both as a 2-10 physician and as a civic leader; and 2-11 WHEREAS, In addition to her many accomplishments in the 2-12 field of health, Dr. Dodson contributed greatly to her community 2-13 by serving on numerous boards and councils; she served on the 2-14 boards of the Power Home, the Victoria Home Health Agency, the 2-15 Child Study Clinic, the Community Action Panel, the Hear Foundation, 2-16 and the Victoria Preservation Society; and 2-17 WHEREAS, In tribute to her outstanding work, she was awarded 2-18 a Points of Light award by President George Bush and a Yellow Rose 2-19 Plaque by Governor Ann Richards; the Victoria Rotary Club named 2-20 Dr. Dodson an outstanding citizen in 1981; and 2-21 WHEREAS, A woman of integrity, strength, compassion, and 2-22 generosity, Dr. Dodson gave unselfishly of her time to others and 2-23 to her community, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will 2-24 not be forgotten by those who knew her; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Dr. Dodson was a devout Christian who lived her life 3-1 to the fullest; she was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church; and 3-2 WHEREAS, Pattie Dodson Gilliam was a devoted wife and mother 3-3 and a dedicated physician, and she leaves behind memories that will 3-4 be treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, 3-5 be it 3-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-7 75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved 3-8 family of Pattie Dodson Gilliam: her children, Constance G. McDougal, 3-9 Dr. Robert M. Gilliam, Mary Jane G. Helm, and Daniel F.
