 1-5                               Marilyn Nelson

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the

 1-7     citizens of Denton County and all Texans in mourning the loss of

 1-8     Marilyn Nelson, who died May 17, 1997, at the age of 66; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Those who knew her as a tireless champion of her

1-10     community will celebrate her life through music and memories

1-11     at a service on May 29, 1997, at Lakeland Baptist Church in

1-12     Lewisville; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A woman of many facets, Marilyn Nelson was a devoted

1-14     wife to Jim Nelson, a wonderful mother to her four children, and a

1-15     loving grandmother to her 11 grandchildren; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Resourceful and determined, Mrs. Nelson was an active

1-17     leader in Denton County civic affairs for almost 30 years; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Admired and respected by all who knew her, this

1-19     courageous woman was a mentor to many and an unfailing benefactor

1-20     to countless worthy causes; and

1-21           WHEREAS, An active participant in state politics,

1-22     Marilyn Nelson was a recipient of the Outstanding Republican

1-23     Volunteer Award, a delegate to the state Republican convention

 2-1     for 25 years, a delegate to the White House Conference on Small

 2-2     Business, and a precinct chairman for almost 25 years; a member of

 2-3     the Senate Inner Circle, her service and leadership were almost

 2-4     unparalleled; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Mrs. Nelson paved the way for her community's arts,

 2-6     philanthropic, and political associations; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Selected recipient of the Lewisville Chamber of

 2-8     Commerce's first Woman of the Year Award in 1989, she was honored

 2-9     for her leadership roles in the Lewisville Arts Council, Community

2-10     Action League, Tejas American Cancer Society, Varied Arts Club, and

2-11     Cross Timbers Girl Scout Council; and

2-12           WHEREAS, In her later years, Marilyn Nelson surpassed

2-13     numerous health setbacks, including being on crutches for 32 years,

2-14     and overcame almost insurmountable obstacles to lead a full and

2-15     exciting life filled with service to others; and

2-16           WHEREAS, A talented woman of many accomplishments, Mrs. Nelson

2-17     was hardworking, ingenious, dignified, and charming; and

2-18           WHEREAS, Marilyn Nelson will be remembered for her legacy of

2-19     courage, dedication, kindness, loyalty, community leadership, and

2-20     love of life; now, therefore, be it

2-21           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-22     75th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Marilyn Nelson

2-23     and extend heartfelt condolences to the members of her family:

2-24     her husband, Jim Nelson; her sons, Mike Nelson, Spence Nelson, and

2-25     Chris Nelson; her daughter, Sarah Tedesco; her brother, Tom McMann;

 3-1     her mother-in-law, Kitty Nelson; her 11 grandchildren; and her

 3-2     lifelong companion, Helen Richardson; and, be it further

 3-3           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

 3-4     members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the

 3-5     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so

 3-6     in memory of Marilyn Nelson.
