 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 943

 1-3           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) has

 1-4     provided access to higher education to thousands of Texans in the

 1-5     23 years since its establishment by the Texas Legislature in 1974;

 1-6     and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown serves the most

 1-8     ethnically diverse student population of any university in Texas,

 1-9     with an enrollment that is 31 percent Hispanic, 29 percent Anglo,

1-10     25 percent African American, 11 percent Asian American, and four

1-11     percent international; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown is continually

1-13     improving accessibility to higher education through such initiatives

1-14     as the Weekend College, which expands opportunities for community

1-15     college transfer students and full-time workers to complete bachelor's

1-16     degrees; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown is one of only

1-18     eight Hispanic-serving institutions nationwide to be accredited

1-19     by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown, as a result

1-21     of a $4.5 million philanthropic gift from Houston Endowment,

1-22     Incorporated, now provides intramural recreation and campus

1-23     activities to its students through the operation of the

 2-1     Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown, as a result of

 2-3     the 73rd Texas Legislature's issuance of $22.4 million in tuition

 2-4     revenue bonds to build a new Academic Building, will provide

 2-5     expanded academic services and student programming space to its

 2-6     constituents; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Through the $1.5 million philanthropic gift of

 2-8     the Cullen Foundation to enhance the university's new Academic

 2-9     Building, the University of Houston-Downtown will name the

2-10     470-seat auditorium the Wilhelmina Cullen Robertson Auditorium;

2-11     and

2-12           WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown works in close

2-13     partnership with Houston's business community to benefit the city

2-14     and state it serves; now, therefore, be it

2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-16     75th Legislature, hereby recognize the University of

2-17     Houston-Downtown's grand opening of the Jesse H. Jones

2-18     Student Life Center and the Academic Building and the Wilhelmina

2-19     Cullen Robertson Auditorium and its continued efforts to promote

2-20     higher education to all Texans; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

2-22     prepared for the University of Houston-Downtown as an expression

2-23     of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
