1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 946

        1-2           WHEREAS, Jason Scott McClellan of Houston, Texas, has

        1-3     been chosen to be an American Legion Boys State citizen, and his

        1-4     selection is most worthy of recognition by the Texas Senate; and

        1-5           WHEREAS, Originated in Illinois in 1935 and adopted that

        1-6     same year by the national organization of the American Legion,

        1-7     the prestigious Boys State Program now operates in 49 states and

        1-8     the District of Columbia; its purpose is to teach American youth

        1-9     understanding of our nation's form of government; and

       1-10           WHEREAS, Jason is one of more than 900 exemplary high school

       1-11     juniors selected in 1997 by officials of their schools and local

       1-12     American Legion posts on the basis of desire to participate in the

       1-13     program and exhibited qualities of character, leadership, integrity,

       1-14     and scholarship; and

       1-15           WHEREAS, The essence of the operation of the Boys State

       1-16     Program is its learn-by-doing environment under the guidance of

       1-17     experienced and capable counselors:  the boys participate in

       1-18     political meetings and elections; as legislators, they perform

       1-19     the functions of writing, debating, and passing laws; then they

       1-20     follow the interpretation and implementation of the laws; now,

       1-21     therefore, be it

       1-22           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       1-23     75th Legislature, hereby join his family, friends, and school

        2-1     in commending and congratulating Jason Scott McClellan for being

        2-2     chosen for the 1997 American Legion Boys State Program; and, be

        2-3     it further

        2-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

        2-5     him as a memento of this honor and its exceptional opportunity and

        2-6     as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate with best wishes

        2-7     for much success in the future.
