 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 958

 1-3           WHEREAS, The thoughts and congratulations of his family and

 1-4     many friends are with Dr. Charles Hartshorne on the momentous

 1-5     and auspicious occasion of his 100th birthday, which will be

 1-6     celebrated on June 5, 1997; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, A professor emeritus of The University of Texas

 1-8     at Austin, Dr. Hartshorne was born June 5, 1897, in Kittanning,

 1-9     Pennsylvania; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Dedicated and talented, Charles Hartshorne earned

1-11     his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1921, his master's

1-12     degree in 1922, and his doctoral degree in 1923; and

1-13           WHEREAS, A role model for his many students, this outstanding

1-14     gentleman taught philosophy at Harvard University, was a professor

1-15     of philosophy at the University of Chicago and Emory University,

1-16     and was the Ashbel Smith Professor of Philosophy at

1-17     The University of Texas at Austin; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Known as an eminent process philosopher,

1-19     Dr. Hartshorne has greatly contributed to the academic and the

1-20     religious community, and he has influenced the scholarly world

1-21     with his eminent works on process theology; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Dr. Hartshorne is considered the most influential

1-23     student of Alfred North Whitehead during our time; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, This esteemed professor has authored several books

 2-2     on process theology, including:  The Divine Relativity; A Natural

 2-3     Theology for Our Time; and Zero Fallacy and Other Essays; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Dr. Hartshorne's theological system stands as one

 2-5     of the most articulate and accessible approaches to the concept

 2-6     of God for religious liberals, and his influence beyond academic

 2-7     philosophy is increasing; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman has exhibited a

 2-9     resolute commitment to the highest standards and ideals of the

2-10     academic profession and he served the liberal religious movement

2-11     with distinction through his teaching, writing, and speaking; he

2-12     is deserving of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-14     75th Legislature, hereby extend birthday greetings to

2-15     Dr. Charles G. Hartshorne and commend him on his academic

2-16     achievements; and, be it further

2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-18     Dr. Hartshorne as an expression of the highest esteem of the

2-19     Texas Senate.
