1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 959 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-3 recognizing David Roberts on his outstanding service as a teacher 1-4 at Mineola High School in Mineola, Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, David Roberts moved to Mineola in 1982 with 1-6 his wife, Diane, and his son, Derek; after deciding to return 1-7 to college, David graduated cum laude from The University of Texas 1-8 at Tyler with a major in history and political science; he then 1-9 attended graduate school at Baylor University for a year; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts began his career at Mineola High School 1-11 in 1993 as an aide to a paralyzed student; in 1994, he was hired 1-12 as a full-time government, economics, and debate teacher; and 1-13 WHEREAS, An innovative and resourceful teacher, Dave Roberts 1-14 initiated the use of the Internet service in his debate classes, 1-15 where through the miracle of modern technology, his students now 1-16 have access to a worldwide web of research information; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Encouraged by the administration's effort to improve 1-18 debate as part of the University Interscholastic League program, 1-19 Mr. Roberts worked through the summer with social studies department 1-20 chairman Jannis Duncan and Principal Glynn Walker to acquire the 1-21 Internet service and the computer and hardware; and 1-22 WHEREAS, This year's national debate topic is juvenile 1-23 crime, and thanks to the efforts of the Mineola administration 2-1 and Mr. Roberts, the Mineola debate students are now able to use 2-2 the Internet service to help them to research, organize, and prepare 2-3 a plan to support their juvenile crime resolution; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Dave Roberts is a first-rate teacher who is dedicated 2-5 to his profession and to his students, and his use of technology 2-6 in the classroom will be a tremendous asset to each of his students 2-7 as they later embark on their careers; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 75th Legislature, hereby commend David Roberts on his teaching 2-10 skills and innovative instructional strategies and extend best 2-11 wishes to him for the future; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-13 Mr. Roberts as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-14 Cain 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 President of the Senate 2-17 I hereby certify that the above 2-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-19 on May 31, 1997. 2-20 ______________________________________ 2-21 Secretary of the Senate 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 Member, Texas Senate
