1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 978

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the Department

        1-3     of Criminal Justice in Huntsville, Deputy Director Jerry Peterson,

        1-4     and citizens across the state in mourning the recent loss of

        1-5     "Officer" Sugar Ray; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, Sugar Ray was a beloved and respected canine who was

        1-7     killed in the line of duty near Fort Davis, Texas, on May 5, 1997;

        1-8     and

        1-9           WHEREAS, Sugar Ray was killed by gunfire while following the

       1-10     precepts of her training and tracking down a criminal who was

       1-11     trying to escape law officers; she and her canine companions, Jane

       1-12     and Susie, had persevered across dry, rugged, and dangerous terrain

       1-13     in an effort to thwart the man's escape; and

       1-14           WHEREAS, A beautiful, loyal, and courageous animal, "Officer"

       1-15     Sugar Ray performed her duties with enthusiasm and joy, and her

       1-16     death was a tremendous loss to those who had trained her and worked

       1-17     with her; and

       1-18           WHEREAS, Dogs are some of God's noblest creatures, and one of

       1-19     God's most precious gifts to mankind, and Sugar Ray exemplified

       1-20     the best of her species; now, therefore, be it

       1-21           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       1-22     75th Legislature, hereby honor the memory of "Officer" Sugar Ray

       1-23     and join others in mourning her loss; and, be it further

        2-1           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

        2-2     Lynaugh Unit in Fort Stockton where Sugar Ray's collar is now on

        2-3     display in her honor.
