1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 983 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 George Santiago Pappas 1-6 Nieves Mogas Pappas 1-7 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas would like to 1-8 pause in its deliberations today to pay tribute to the parents 1-9 of one of its most respected members, Senator Judith Zaffirini; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, Senator Zaffirini was blessed with two devoted 1-12 parents who were exemplary role models in her formative years; 1-13 and 1-14 WHEREAS, Her father, George Santiago Pappas, was of Greek 1-15 and Hispanic descent and was born on May 10, 1916, Mother's Day 1-16 in Mexico; he was the son of the late Sarah Rodriguez and 1-17 Santiago Pappas; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Heralded as the "only Greek bullfighter in the 1-19 world," George Santiago Pappas was a superb athlete, and he 1-20 lettered in every available high school sport; and 1-21 WHEREAS, George Pappas was well known as an outstanding 1-22 tennis player and coach; he enjoyed a long and productive career 1-23 with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and he passed away on 2-1 August 14, 1989; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Senator Zaffirini's mother, Nieves Mogas, married 2-3 George Pappas and became a loving and dedicated mother to their 2-4 daughters; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Born on November 24, 1916, Nieves Mogas Pappas was 2-6 a descendant of Don Tomas Sanchez, one of the foremost founding 2-7 fathers of Laredo; and 2-8 WHEREAS, A lifetime resident of Laredo, she was a 1936 cum 2-9 laude graduate of Laredo High School and attended Laredo Junior 2-10 College; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Mrs. Pappas was office manager at Laredo Air Force 2-12 Base after having served as secretary to 13 Wing Commanders; she 2-13 retired in 1982; and 2-14 WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Mrs. Pappas was an active member 2-15 of Saint John Neuman Catholic Church; and 2-16 WHEREAS, A woman who sought to give back to her community, 2-17 Nieves was active in the Mercy Regional Center Auxiliary, the 2-18 National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the 2-19 American Association of Retired Persons; and 2-20 WHEREAS, Nieves was a loving wife and a devoted mother, and 2-21 her commitment to God, family, and community was reflected 2-22 throughout her many years of service to each; Mrs. Pappas passed 2-23 away on May 18, 1996, at the age of 79; and 2-24 WHEREAS, Senator Zaffirini and her husband, Carlos, are 2-25 blessed with their son, Carlos Zaffirini, Jr., who has been the 3-1 source of great pride and joy; now, therefore, be it 3-2 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-3 75th Legislature, hereby honor the memory of George Santiago Pappas 3-4 and Nieves Mogas Pappas who left a lasting legacy of dignity, 3-5 compassion, and strength of character; and, be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-7 Senator Zaffirini as an expression of the highest esteem and regard 3-8 of the Texas Senate. 3-9 Truan 3-10 Armbrister Galloway Ogden 3-11 Barrientos Harris Patterson 3-12 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 3-13 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 3-14 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 3-15 Carona Luna Sibley 3-16 Duncan Madla Wentworth 3-17 Ellis Moncrief West 3-18 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 3-19 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 3-20 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-21 ______________________________________ 3-22 President of the Senate 3-23 I hereby certify that the above 3-24 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-25 on June 2, 1997, by a rising vote. 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 Secretary of the Senate 3-28 ______________________________________ 3-29 Dean of the Senate
