1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1010 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing (Joseph John) "Joe" Salem for his many 1-5 worthwhile contributions to Corpus Christi and Nueces County; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, Born on December 29, 1920, in Corpus Christi, he 1-8 was the son of Victoria Moses and Sam Salem; in 1952, Joe Salem 1-9 married Christine Aboud, and they raised a family of three 1-10 children: Sam, Joseph John, Jr., and Christine; and 1-11 WHEREAS, This remarkable gentleman has always been willing 1-12 to give of his time and talents to any worthy cause; and 1-13 WHEREAS, In 1940, Joe volunteered to fight for his 1-14 country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps, and he 1-15 was discharged in 1945 as a Captain; as a civilian, he continued to 1-16 promote the interests of his military comrades through membership 1-17 in the American Legion Post No. 248, now Post No. 364, eventually 1-18 becoming Commander of the Post; and 1-19 WHEREAS, An enterprising young man, he opened his 1-20 first business, the Jewelry Center, at 508 Peoples Street in 1-21 Corpus Christi and soon expanded to a second location; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A man who enjoys the company of his fellows, 1-23 he is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Young Men's 2-1 Christian Association, the Better Business Bureau, and the 2-2 Nueces County Democratic Organization; Joe Salem was appointed 2-3 by President Kennedy and President Johnson to Commissions on 2-4 Employment of the Handicapped and Employment of the Older Worker; 2-5 and 2-6 WHEREAS, Mr. Salem was a Texas State Representative from 2-7 1969 through 1976; his distinguished service as a member of that 2-8 body included participation in the Vietnam Paris Peace Talks in 2-9 1982, which sought accord on the release of American prisoners of 2-10 war; and 2-11 WHEREAS, He has been the recipient of numerous honors and 2-12 has been recognized by the Boys Club of America, the Classroom 2-13 Teachers Association, and the Kiwanis Club; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Joe Salem received the Lifetime Achievement Award 2-15 from the Volunteer Center of the Coastal Bend, and he has been 2-16 honored by the Junior League of Corpus Christi; and 2-17 WHEREAS, For the past 35 years, Mr. Salem has completely 2-18 financed Thanksgiving dinners at the Boys and Girls Club; at 2-19 that event around 600 elderly and poor people are fed; and 2-20 WHEREAS, Through his many selfless actions, this worthy 2-21 civic leader has touched the lives of thousands; and 2-22 WHEREAS, The citizens of Corpus Christi, Nueces County, 2-23 and the State of Texas have greatly benefitted from the 2-24 innumerable efforts of Mr. Joe Salem; he is certainly worthy 2-25 of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-2 75th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the exceptional 3-3 accomplishments of Joe Salem; and, be it further 3-4 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-5 the Honorable Joe Salem and his family as an expression of the 3-6 high regard of the Texas Senate. 3-7 Truan 3-8 Armbrister Galloway Ogden 3-9 Barrientos Harris Patterson 3-10 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 3-11 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 3-12 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 3-13 Carona Luna Sibley 3-14 Duncan Madla Wentworth 3-15 Ellis Moncrief West 3-16 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 3-17 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 3-18 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 President of the Senate 3-21 I hereby certify that the above 3-22 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-23 on June 2, 1997. 3-24 ______________________________________ 3-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-26 ______________________________________ 3-27 Dean of the Senate
