                                   FISCAL NOTE
                               75th Regular Session

                                  February 26, 1997

TO: Honorable Clyde Alexander, Chair IN RE: House Bill No. 297
          Committee on Transportation By: Driver
          House
          Austin, Texas

         FROM: John Keel, Director

In response to your request for a Fiscal Note on HB297 ( Relating
to certain signs controlling use of traffic lanes.) this office
has detemined the following:

Biennial Net Impact to General Revenue Funds by HB297-As Introduced

Implementing the provisions of the bill would result in a net
impact of $0 to General Revenue Related Funds through the biennium
ending August 31, 1999.

Fiscal Analysis

The bill would require the Department of Transportation or a
local authority, on a highway having more than one lane with
vehicles traveling in the same direction, that places a sign
that directs slower traffic to travel in a lane other than the
farthest left lane, to read "left lane for passing only".

Methodolgy

The estimate was derived by estimating the number of signs which
will be required to be replaced (2,000) and multiplied by the
estimated cost to fabricate each new sign ($500). Total cost
is $1,000,000 (2,000 x $500).

The probable fiscal implications of implementing the provisions
of the bill during each of the first five years following passage
is estimated as follows:

Fiscal Year Probable Change in Number
