LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD Austin, Texas FISCAL NOTE 75th Regular Session April 6, 1997 TO: Honorable Rodney Ellis, Chair IN RE: Senate Bill No. 1180 Committee on Jurisprudence By: Madla Senate Austin, Texas FROM: John Keel, Director In response to your request for a Fiscal Note on SB1180 ( Relating to the liability status of police officers and firefighters when they are performing their duties.) this office has detemined the following: Biennial Net Impact to General Revenue Funds by SB1180-As Introduced No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated. This bill would only apply to the cities of Austin, Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio. The bill would change the liability status of police officers and fire fighters performing their duties to business invitees. This bill could result in reduced liability to the municipalities affected, since it would allow them to subrogate to property owners for money expended on behalf of police officers and firefighters. In a municipality covered by a self-insurance program, the amount of money which could be saves as a result of this bill would depend on the number of cases which could be subrogated to property owners rather than paid by the self-insurance program. Municipalities that purchase insurance policies could see a reduction in premiums as a result of the bill. Source: Agencies: 304 Comptroller of Public Accounts LBB Staff: JK ,BB ,TL
