House Committee on Higher Education

         Pursuant to a notice posted on August 13, 1998, the House  
         Committee on Higher Education met in a public hearing and was  
         called to order by the Chair, Representative Irma Rangel at  
         9:12 am. 
          
         The roll was answered as follows:   
          
         Present:  Representatives Rangel; Solis; Cuellar; Rabuck;  
                   Uresti (5). 
          
         Absent:   Representatives Bailey; Dunnam; Kamel; Reyna, Elvira  
                   (4). 
          
         A quorum was present. 
          
         (Representative Dunnam now present.) 
          
         The committee took testimony on the following interim charge:  
         (see attached witness list) 
          
              Review the effects of the Hopwood decision and the  
         responses to the decision by institutions of higher learning,  
         including professional schools.  Monitor the implementation of  
         H.B. 588 and policies of the Texas Higher Education  
         Coordinating Board, and assess the impacts of such measures. 
          
         At 8:17 pm, on the motion of the chair and without objection,  
         the meeting was adjourned subject to the call of the chair.
