Pursuant to a notice posted on September 24, 1998, the House
Committee on Public Health met in a public hearing and was
called to order by the Chair, Representative John Hirschi at
10:36 am.
The roll was answered as follows:
Present: Representatives Hirschi; Capelo; Delisi; Glaze;
Maxey; Uresti (6).
Absent: Representatives Coleman; Davila; Janek (3).
A quorum was present.
The committee took testimony on its interim charges to: (see
attached witness list)
Study the effects of cardiovascular disease in Texas and
assess the potential to reduce the health, social and
economic impacts through affirmative action programs on
prevention, care and treatment;
Evaluate the educational and regulatory mechanisms
currently in place to protect consumers from food-borne
illnesses transmitted through the retail food
distribution system; and
Monitor the implementation of H.B. 3 (Texas Health Kids
Corporation), and study the provisions of the federal
Balanced Budget Act that relate to children's health.
At 11:40 a.m., upon a motion by the chair and without
objection, the House Committee on Public Health was recessed
until 11:55 a.m.
At 11:55 a.m. the House Committee on Public Health
re-convened, subject to the call of the chair.

Review the Indigent Health Care Act of 1985 for possible
updating.
At 12:35 p.m. the meeting was adjourned subject to the call of
the chair.
