MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS Monday, April 7, 1997 2:00 pm Capitol Extension, Room E1.016 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.11, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nominations was held on Monday, April 7, 1997 in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.016, at Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Frank Madla None Senator Florence Shapiro Senator Gonzalo Barrientos Senator J.E. Brown Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator Tom Haywood Senator Drew Nixon ***** The Chair called the meeting to order at 2:00 pm. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted. The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas Youth Commission. Senator Carona introduced nominee, Lisa S. Teschner. Senators Lindsay, Gallegos and Whitmire introduced nominee, Pete C. Alfaro. At 2:15pm, Senator Gallegos moved to consider and report to the Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Texas Youth Commission be confirmed. Senator Nixon seconded the motion. The Chair asked the Committee Members for unanimous consent to show Senators Barrientos and Shapiro as voting aye. There being no objection, Senators Barrientos and Shapiro were shown voting aye. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present not voting, and 0 absent. The Chair laid out the name of the nominee for the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Commerce. Witnesses testifying and registering on the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Commerce are shown on the attached list. At 3:10pm, Senator Shapiro moved to consider and report to the Senate with the recommendation that the nominee for the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Commerce be confirmed. Senator Haywood seconded the motion. The motion carried with a vote of 6 ayes, 0 nays, 1 present not voting, and 0 absent. The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas Commission for the Blind. Senator Lindsay introduced nominees, W. Frank Mullican, Jr. and C. Robert Keeney, Jr. Senator Zaffirini introduced nominee, Beverly A. Stiles. Senator Barrientos introduced nominee, James L. Caldwell, Ph.D. Senator Nixon introduced nominee, Don W. Oates. Senator Shapiro introduced nominee, John M. Turner. Witnesses testifying and registering on the Texas Commission for the Blind are shown on the attached list. At 4:13pm, the Chair moved that the nominees to the Texas Commission for the Blind be left pending. At 4:15pm, Senator Gallegos moved to consider and report to the Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Agriculture Resources Protection Authority, Automobile Theft Prevention Authority, Interagency Council on Early Childhood Intervention Services, Texas Cosmetology Commission, Texas Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Board, Texas Turnpike Authority Board of Directors, Texas Department of Commerce Policy Board, State Depository Board, Texas Energy Coordination Council, Governing Board of the International Trade Commission, and the San Jacinto Historical Advisory Board be confirmed. Senator Haywood seconded the motion. The Chair asked the Committee Members for unanimous consent to show Senator Brown as voting aye. There being no objection, Senator Brown was shown voting aye. The motion carried with a vote of 7 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present not voting, and 0 absent. There being no further business, at 5:00 pm the Chair moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the Chair.
