Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule
11.11, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nominations
was held on Monday, May 12, 1997 in the Capitol Extension,
Room E1.016, at Austin, Texas.

Senator Shapiro, the Acting Chair, called the meeting to order
at 3:10 pm. There being a quorum present, the following
business was transacted.
The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas
Board on Aging.
Senator Nixon introduced nominee, Miriam Burton.
Senator Ellis introduced nominee, Holly Williamson.
Senator Sibley introduced nominee, Dr. Jack Burton.
Senator Carona introduced nominee, Jan Patterson.
Senator Bivins introduced nominee, William Shaner.
Senator Nixon introduced nominee, Thomas Oliver.
At 3:40 pm, Senator Nixon moved to consider and report to the
Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Texas
Board on Aging be confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 4 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 3 absent.
The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas
State Board of Chiropractic Examiners.
Senator Moncrief introduced nominee, Keith Hubbard.
Senator Lucio introduced nominee, Dora Valverde.
Senator Cain introduced nominee, John Weddle, D.C.
Senator Ellis introduced nominee, Carolyn Williams, D.C.
The Chair introduced nominee, Oliver Smith, Jr., D.C.
The Chair laid out the name of the nominee for the Texas
Lottery Commission.
Senator Ellis introduced nominee, John Hill, Jr.
At 5:05 pm, Senator Gallegos moved to consider and report to
the Senate with the recommendation that the nominee for the
Texas Lottery Commission be confirmed.
Senator Nixon seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 4 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 3 absent.
The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas
State Board Medical Examiners.

Senator Lindsay introduced nominee, Peter Chang, M.D.
The Chair introduced nominees, Ann Forehand, Janet
Tornelli-Mitchell, M.D., and Larry Price, D.O.

The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the State
Pension Review Board.
The Chair introduced nominees, William Mahomes and Frederick
Rowe, Jr.

Senator Barrientos introduced nominee, Shari Shivers.
The Chair introduced nominee, Leonard Cargill and Craig
Goralski, Sr.
The Chair laid out the names of the nominee for the State
Preservation Board.
Senator Barrientos introduced nominee, Dealey Herndon.
At 6:20 pm, Senator Haywood moved to consider and report to
the Senate with the recommendation that the nominee for the
State Preservation Board be confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
At 6:21 pm, Senator Nixon moved to consider and report to the
Senate with the recommendation that the nominee for the State
Pension Review Board be confirmed.
Senator Barrientos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
The Chair laid out the names of the nominees for the Texas
Racing Commission.
Senator Ogden introduced nominee, Larry Christopher.
Senator Galloway introduced nominee, James Schulze, D.V.M.
At 6:27 pm, Senator Barrientos moved to consider and report to
the Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the
Texas Racing Commission be confirmed.
Senator Nixon seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
At 6:30 pm, Senator Nixon moved to consider and report to the
Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Texas
State Board of Medical Examiners be confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
At 6:35 pm, Senator Nixon moved to consider and report to the
Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Texas
State Board of Chiropractic Examiners be confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 4 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 3 absent.
The Chair laid out the name of the nominee for the Texas
Transportation Commission.
Senator Nixon introduced nominee, Robert Nichols.
At 6:40 pm, Senator Barrientos moved to consider and report to
the Senate with the recommendation that the nominee for the
Texas Transportation Commission be confirmed.
Senator Nixon seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
At 6:40 pm, Senator Nixon moved to consider and report to the
Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the Board
of Directors of the Trinity River Authority of Texas, Board of
Trustees of the Texas County and District Retirement System,
Employees Retirement System of Texas Board of Trustees,
Teacher Retirement System of Texas Board of Trustees, and the
Texas Municipal Retirement System Board of Trustees be
confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 4 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 3 absent.
At 6:41 pm, Senator Haywood moved to consider and report to
the Senate with the recommendation that the nominees for the
Texas Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board, Texas
Diabetes Council, Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, and
the Texas Commission for the Blind be confirmed.
Senator Gallegos seconded the motion.
The motion carried with a vote of 5 ayes, 0 nays, 0 present
not voting, and 2 absent.
There being no further business, at 6:45 pm, The Chair moved
that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the
Chair. Without objection, it was so ordered.
