MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON NAFTA (INTERIM) Thursday, August 20, 1998 10:00 am Capitol Extension, Room E1.012 ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.11, an open meeting of the Senate Committee on NAFTA (Interim) was held on Thursday, August 20, 1998 in the Capitol Extension, Room E1.012, at Austin, Texas. ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Carlos F. Truan, Chairman Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator John Carona Senator Steve Ogden Senator Eliot Shapleigh ***** Chairman Truan called the meeting to order at 10:15 am. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted. The Chair made opening remarks and recognized Mexican Consul Francisco Roux Lopez, who made brief remarks before the Committee. The Chair then recognized Senators Carona, Shapleigh and Ogden for opening remarks. A discussion followed. Senator Carona moved to adopt the minutes from the April 15, 1998 meeting. The motion was seconded by Senator Shapleigh. There being no objection, it was so ordered. The Chairman began a review of the draft recommendations. A discussion followed. With regard to Charge Number 4, the Committee recommended that a joint standing committee of the House and Senate be formed to monitor the impact of NAFTA on Texas' infrastructure. Senator Ogden made a motion to adopt the interim report. The motion was seconded by Senator Shapleigh. There being 4 ayes and 0 nayes, the motion was adopted. There being no further business, at 11:00 a.m. Senator Carona moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the Chair.
